      Technical Recruiter Interview

      Jun 9, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at care.coach

      Interview

Victor reached out to me on LinkedIn shortly after I applied. I answered his screening questions and was instructed to schedule with someone else to complete a technical assignment. The assignment was very simple and I was told that I passed and instructed to schedule an interview with Victor. Interview started off fine until Victor told me I didn't meet their experience qualifications. I work for a small company and I have done recruiting in some capacity for them since 2015 and I have been the sole recruiter for the company for two years but because I never held the title of Recruiter, none of this seemed to be of any value to my interviewer. If I did not meet the qualifications for the role, that's all fine with me, but I wish he had not wasted my time asking me to complete the technical assignment and phone screen if he could tell just from my resume that he would not hire me. Additionally, Victor told me he had a few more interviews to get through and would get back to me after they were completed. He did not say he would get back to me "if there was a good fit." I obviously knew this interview did not go well, but Victor did not have enough respect for me to give me an answer following our interview even though he told me he would. Based on my brief experience with this company, I am doubtful of the CEO's integrity and leadership skills and would encourage him to reflect on some of the other experiences people have shared here. I am sure he is very busy being such an important person but it does not take any extra time to treat people with respect.

Touché! Thanks for the feedback. It is true that previously with our part-time recruiting efforts we've often let candidates through to a later stage of the process without fully confirming all the basic requirements, and will be more diligent about that going forward especially now that we have full-time recruiting effort. I have also noticed that I sometimes slip from the script which is as you suggest to say "if there's a good fit" and accidentally say that I will get back to someone as a certainty, so I will pay more attention to that too, and thanks for pointing that out. Best wishes!

      Easy interview

      Application

      Interview

I want to begin by saying that my interview was extremely unprofessional. There were many long and awkward pauses. The CEO made an effort to dog on other candidates he interviewed before. Victor did not know what he was doing and seems to lack proper communication skills and direction when it comes to handling potential recruitment candidates. Just like the reviews below, I noticed that Victor had a tone and a somewhat inflated ego. Going to a prestigious school and/or starting a company does not make you better than others. He didn't seem to care about my answers and talked himself in circles. He was unenthusiastic, unprepared, and uninformative. Pay also seemed to be a big facilitator in our interview. Why inflate the performance of your company if you are not willing to inflate the outlook of potential employees? I was honestly appalled by my interview. It is unfortunate that his poor people skills have overshadowed his performance overall. After my experience, I have come to realize that I would never want to work for someone like Victor. Hopefully, he learns from reviews to make a difference in his hiring process and people skills in general.

Sorry we did not get along. It seems you said/asked something interesting or unusual as I don't normally do much talking on these screening calls other than ask my usual questions, so good for you -- interesting/unusual is good in my book, but since you cleverly posted your bad review on a different day than our screening call, I don't know what that is or who you are. Apart from your subjective opinions which I cannot meaningfully comment on, I feel I should point out to any of your readers here that you are factually incorrect about the interview questions, as "Tell me about yourself." is never one of them. Best wishes.

      Interview

Victor reached out to me on LinkedIn after I applied and right off the bat, he rubbed me the wrong way. Reading his responses to these reviews confirms that he is the buffoon I thought he was. I am giving direct feedback here so Victor can self-adapt, should he wish. He has used these exact words responding to others on Glassdoor here so why can't I? After I applied, he sent me the following LinkedIn message. Not even a thank you for showing interest in his stupid company. "Hi, I noticed you are in XXX. Are you moving up to the Bay area? We're looking for someone to start right away. If you are moving here right away please answer the following screening questions" one of which was "are you okay with a salary of 60k." I make 105k right now so I declined to move forward. Does "right away" mean a week, a month, etc.? Great comm skills, Victor. He boasts here on Glassdoor about being able to pay SWEs 100K< yet he's not even willing to pay market value for a Bay Area tech recruiter. Victor claims <1% of applicants get accepted to care.coach? I don't believe that. Seriously, who would want to work for Victor Wang? Your company isn't that well known or desirable--especially with you in charge. Never heard of it before I applied. Get off your high horse Mr. MIT. Even if he could offer me triple what I make I still wouldn't want to work for this clown. I'm sorry to all of his current employees. Learn some people skills man. You spent only 36 seconds on the phone with a candidate here on Glassdoor? That's simply disrespectful--I would never do that to a candidate regardless of how "unprofessional" they were.

Sorry to rub you the wrong way and thanks for the actionable feedback. We should probably be more consistent about starting our intro messages with a thank for note for taking an interest, and will make sure our messaging is improved going forward. Unfortunately I'm unclear as to why a simple LinkedIn message and a quick decline to proceed on your part should have incited you to do all of the research and write all of the above, so I'm sorry if there was something else meaningfully negative about your experience that I was not able to discern from your writing. For anybody else reading this, we put up a few job posts for this role (single hire) on 4/9 and by 4/13 had >200 applicants, about 30% of whom we deemed were qualified based on their resumes. We stopped keeping close count after that but I imagine got to around 400 applicants before we closed the funnel, with >100 qualified. Unfortunately a lot of this is driven by COVID, I'm sure, but it's pretty clear to me that objectively we are targeting a <1% hire rate, as with our other positions which COVID notwithstanding we may need to spend more recruiting effort on. So, just presenting some data for anybody who cares about data. I believe it is only fair to candidates and good for screening purposes to be transparent about hire rates so that candidates who don't think they are likely to be the best fit don't have to spend a lot of time with our rather involved hiring processes.
