Pros

They give you a paycheck

Cons

They do really well on selling you on the job. However, it’s nothing like the job description. Being a comanager is basically being a glorified cashier/salesman. That does whatever the store manager doesn’t want to do. As a trainee you have to unload and load windows and doors, that are heavy, and carry them across the warehouse. No carts or easier way to do it. They have training videos, but my store manager just told me how to answer the phone, and then threw me to the wolves, with no one to help me. Instead of having me actually complete my training first and understand a little more how things work . No work life balance, you may compensate people for their time but most people do not want to work 48 hours a week. The schedule is horrible you’ll be at work lol day with no time to schedule appointments. And they don’t pay enough for basically having you do everything. Lastly, the pod system is so complicated for no reason. The most complicated pod system I’ve ever seen.

Pros

The sky is the limit with this company. They promote from the ground up. If you don't put your time in you won't get compensated..... it's as simple as that. Yes, MT is grunt work(you'll clean bathrooms, do dirty work etc..) but if you're like me and came in with zero building knowledge you will learn a TON! You can move up quick if you apply yourself. You have to take a written test and go to corporate(PA) for two classes before you can be promoted to co manager. But there are multiple routes you can take other than management that don't require all the "red tape". Just know that 84 offers a lot of opportunity so don't get discouraged by the initial pay.. it's entry level pay for a reason.. they don't want you to be there forever.

Cons

While I understand making entry level pay a tad light prevents employees from getting complacent i still think $9.42/hr is way too low. Especially for guys in stores that aren't hitting quota. Had I not started in a store that hit supers and level 4's I probably wouldn't have stuck with it just because I wouldn't have been able to survive. You also have to relocate to take a promotion in the management field. Depending on how your counter is set up you could be working 60+ hours. If you have more than one MT then there should be no reason to work more than 50ish hours a week.

Pros

The employees are friendly and people oriented. They do want to assist you in training but they are all doing 3 different jobs at the same time. The regional manager from California was especially personable. My sales person R.D was especially great to work with but he was swamped and assisted intermittently when he could.. This is a small volume store with potential for bigger sales with the right personnel .

Cons

This statement from their manual is completely incorrect." At 84 Lumber we offer an excellent and comprehensive Early Development Program and Home Study Program, which successful candidates complete within 4 to 6 months. All successful candidates attend a comprehensive 3-day training program our Corporate Headquarters where you will get one on one training" I worked 3 days...had about 1.5 hours of 3 employees show me how THEY do things....there is no operation manual nor training manual..computer programs are outdated....I have worked 10 years each at two great jobs...84 manager fired me on day 3....we had app. 2 conversations while I was there...employees were nice and as helpful as they could be. Store cleanliness is not a priority.. This actually was a blessing to be fired...I had a job waiting for me when I got home.....Everyone should be fired at least once in their career...I think?...Turn over is high.
