Pros

There are a lot of great people that work at the AACR that are very dedicated to putting out a great product, be it the scientific conferences or the scientific journals.

Cons

Upper Management (CEO) is overly involved in every decision down to the lowest levels making it difficult to keep reasonable timelines. CEO's view is that every one should be happy to have a job at the AACR and should dedicate their life to the AACR (which really means dedicate their life to her). HR is incompetent and with little oversight from the Board of Directors there is no real checks and balances on CEO, which ultimately results in the large employee turnover.

Pros

The organization is at the forefront of cancer research. One of the perks of the org is that you will never get fired, which leads to one of the problems of incompetent employees who are comfortable, staying/being kept around for as long as they will stay due to the CEOs love of loyal employees (i.e. longevity). Thus you have a lot of the most tenured employees who are lingering and proving to be the most ineffective, uncreative, uninspired demographic of the organization and biggest part of the problem which in turn is dragging the organization down.

Cons

The organization is stuck in a time warp (from the 70s) from the physical plant to the rules, regulations and benefits. Have you ever heard a rule that you can't listen to music at your desk, even at a low level? They are scarily comfortable with "that's the way things have always been" as opposed to what is the best for the organization, what is an industry standard or a best practice. The administration/HR department couldn't tell you anything about benchmarking because most of the benefits don't "kick in" for one year (except for medical/dental) and the 403b plan doesn't kick in for two years!! There is no interest in "modernizing" the organization from the dated fabric cubicles, the darkness of the work areas, to the 70s tile setup of the bathrooms that don't circulate any air. Working from home does not exist.

Antiquated management style with little room for true growth

Pros

Many wonderful people working in lower and middle positions, decent time off, pretty good benefits package--especially compared to what other companies offer these days, and a great Center City location. A truly wonderful group of people working in the trenches, and I learned so many things because the lack of proper resources taught me how to be adaptable and think fast on my feet.

Cons

Excessive micromanagement from a CEO that is reminiscent of a late-in-life Howard Hughes who is paranoid and often cruel. She'll probably die in her office, she's got no intention of ever retiring. Pay is low even for management positions and HR breaks the laws that HR is supposed to enforce, though they can be fun to gossip with. I was treated well and promoted many times there, but most of my colleagues were not so lucky, it's a weird game there and you can only get promoted if the right people like you so I always felt guilty when I was given a promotion I earned because I watched many other deserving and hard working people get passed up. Now that I have spent a few years outside of the company I can see even more clearly just how dysfunctional and unhealthy it was working there.
