Pros

Some control over the work you do Great time off allowance (vacation, sick time, etc.) especially if you've been there 6+ years Location is great - right in the heart of DC

Cons

Some managers are not so competent; your happiness/misery depends a lot on your manager AARP is EVER changing things it makes one dizzy. In Research, for example, when one leader leaves, the next one wants to make his/her mark and changes things even when the old way was working just fine. Since being hired 5 years ago my position and duties have changed significantly. Yet there are still inefficiencies. And name changes are the norm. We do an employee feedback survey each year. No matter how loudly the results scream, there don't seem to be changes, as the weak spots are the same every year.

Pros

Talented people working to further a mission.

Cons

Authoritarian leadership approach which shows up in behaviors such as policing in-office attendance, top-down decision making with little ability to influence from the middle, and hiring people with similar backgrounds into senior positions.
