Reasonable developer opportunity

Pros

If you are on the right project, this is a great place to develop weather software. You will learn weather and aerospace science - that is also their usual background. Benefits are fairly good.

Cons

Science is on the bleeding edge, but software technology is definitely not. Long-term projects are rarely, if ever, refactored for newer technology. Financial IT is also obsolete (paper time sheets, expenses and purchasing). There is a silo mentality, with not much opportunity to transfer projects. Few opportunities for more senior developers from outside. Bonus is uncompetitive within the SW industry.

Pros

Potential to work on interesting projects/contracts Hard work and time with the company are rewarded with promotions along designated career path. Great place if you enjoy talking about the weather and arguing that your favorite model is correct.

Cons

Uncompetitive annual salary and bonus increases. Scientists get taken care of, developers...good luck getting upper management to care. Supposedly the same opportunities are available (no funding or time)

Pros

The work-life balance is great. The work and subject matter of interesting. There are lots of bright employees. Schedules are flexible. The health insurance is good.

Cons

The company has been steadily laying off staff for almost two years. Management is trying to refocus from government contracts to commercial product but it has not been happening fast enough to stem the decline and prevent starvation. Nobody got raises that kept pace with inflation this year. Hardware and professional development budgets are inadequate.
