Pros

The only pro is the cause and mission of the foundation. Impacting and serving a community that needs resources and services to continue to live a fulfilling life.

Cons

A lot of cons about this company. During my tenure here, I have witnessed some employees being fired for no reason. You are made aware that they can fire you at will, but you would think there would be careful consideration before displacing people. I have also seen employees, some that have put in 5+ years, quit because of the lack of support from upper management. The management structure is terrible and there is a power struggle from all those in the higher ranks. This is a nonprofit organization, but if employees are expected to continue to provide high quality care, you would think monetary compensation and the room for growth is there. But it is not. There are no quarterly, bi-annual, or even annual evaluations. So, no raises for any employee on the frontline. You do get a cost of living adjustment at the beginning of every year but at the rate of 2% in California. You'll barely see an effect on your paycheck. Let's say if you are a current employee and you applied for a position at another location that required you to move, they don't even pay for relocation!!! I witnessed an employee being asked to relocate to another location and as soon as that employee moved and completed their task, that employee was fired! There are currently a lot of unhappy employees who are looking to leave because of these reasons. One employee even told me, Michael Weinstein the President of the company, said at an employee conference that the healthcare workers are a "dime a dozen." Yes, the head of the company said that. So, if you are thinking of applying for any position for this company, TAKE CAREFUL CONSIDERATION!

Pros

At my time at this position, I enjoyed working with an excellent and passionate medical team to assist walk-in patients at the wellness clinic in Austin. The healthcare team was very welcoming and helpful when it came to my position. I liked helping folks from underserved communities with HIV prevention, PrEP initiation/monitoring, and STI prevention. I was constantly thanked by many patients for my assistance, knowledge, and STI educating practices in helping them with sx health.

Cons

What made this position difficult was the lack of support and communication from upper management (directors and assistant directors). Furthermore, at my location, senior management was difficult to work with. I experienced micromanagement, lack of training, and lack of education about my position and what my responsibilities were in that role. There was lack of clear direction with my role, and on top of that, the clinic I was hired for was not going to be built out for about 1 year. I did my research before I took my position and checked employee online reviews and they seemed helpful. However, my experience was completely the opposite and misleading. I recommend folks steer clear of AHF for good reasons because the lack of empathy towards employees from management, lack of good training, and lack of clear definition of roles with this organization.
