Pros

helping patients save on meds that would otherwise bankrupt any one of us. Great outreach programs and events that employees can be involved with. Great benefits.

Cons

First, your experience could be very different from the one I had but I want to let you know that this organization and the people in it, from managers to co-workers to the HR department, engage/condone/tolerate workplace mobbing, and the ones engaging in it go to psychologically disturbing lengths. So, if you can navigate an environment where you or someone you work with could be mobbed/bullied and still do your job, then take the job. If you can know that something like this goes on and you are still able to show up to work, do your job and watch your own back, then take the job. Because, I guess there are people working at AHF that manage to help their patients, so maybe you can do it too? I don’t know, people are different. But before you consider taking a job at this organization, get you a copy of Janice Harper’s book, Mobbed, and read you a few articles on the psychology of group think among other things, and then decide. This type of stuff doesn’t happen everywhere, and it’s NOT normal, so people need to know.

Toxic work environment

Pros

Dedicated and highly motivated people are drawn to the company, but quickly realize that intelligence and hard work are simply not valued here.

Cons

Michael Weinstein is the CEO/president who surrounds himself with frankly unqualified advisors who will never contradict his ideas. He uses the mask of altruism to promote himself. His favorite goal is not to bring quality healthcare to the underserved, but to be big, The biggest. And take credit for saving all those lives on billboards that brag about numbers AHF boasts to have saved. It is no wonder that AHF has such a shockingly high employee turnover, and has had a mass exodus of HIV doctors. AHF is widely disliked by the AIDS services community. Weinstein is an embarrassment.

Pros

Feeling like you work for a noble cause, great t-shits for various events, and coffee bar in the office. You can get a job with NO HIV EXPERIENCE.

Cons

This job really damaged me as a professional and harmed my wellbeing. All of the best and brightest have left or on the way out. There were good days, but the days where I was humiliated and contradicted were the worst. Divergent directives caused many misunderstandings and tension. It would have been so much easier if leadership just came clean and said- look guys we really don't know what were doing here. We're trying our best (just like you) and appreciate you hanging in with us while we work together to figure things out.
