The Truth about Akuna

Pros

Some good people, in a culturally significant area which makes going to lunch nice, in a spacious office. Good experience with high frequency trading.

Cons

Long hours, tons of pressure, workspace is average, no free lunch or snacks, no free drinks (CEO does not believe in tipping), arrogance. Nepotism: CEO & CFO are married.CEO, COO, Head of Trading, and CEO are best friends. Be careful if you have an opinion that disagrees with them, they will not like it and you will not rise in the company. Terrible work/life balance: there are constant "initiatives" that you have to complete yesterday so the compnay can succeed. When we deliver, and profit the leadership does not share the gains. No or low bonuses. CEO micro manages everything. He is leading developer scrums and telling HR how to do their job better. The CEO also plays favortism with certain ethnic groups. If you are Australian you are well liked, otherwise you are on the outside of the decision making loop. Arrogant and inexperienced are the key words here. Also I would like to mention that the CEO walks around in his bare feet all the time which is super classy. That being said, you may have to endure a "workout" meeting where he does pull ups while you try to convey important information about the firm between a set.

Pros

- A vibrant and fascinating place to work - The learning curve is incredibly steep however they train you in a way that gives you every opportunity to succeed if you come armed with the right attitude - The organization is generally a flat structure and traders, quants and developers aptitudes and skillets are recognized early in the process and are given ample time to develop - A great motivator of this job is working with incredibly intelligent and driven colleagues who are all pushing to make Akuna a thriving success, which it is already is in its short existence

Cons

As with any company growing as fast as Akuna is, there are obvious growing pains which the organization have to overcome such as available office space and meeting rooms (bring back the ping pong table!! it is dearly missed!!) As the company is relatively young in terms of its competitors, outside sources sometimes believe we are not as tech-savvy and tech-focused as others. This is quite the contrary though as vast resources are allocated to making our proprietary systems the best in the business

Pros

Spend a lot of money on expansion. I felt happy for the first 3 months and learnt a lot of useful things on options and market making.

Cons

No very technical and quantitative driven firm. Focus too much on expansion but less on how to keep people.Compensation is not good at all compared to its Chicago peers. You can see old people leave and new people in from time to time. High turn over.
