Pros

Being a part of the design team during some of the most important transitions for the company was a formative experience. When I worked here, a lot of the product strategy was design-led. There are pros and cons to this, but as a designer you are given a lot of room for visioning and ideating. I always felt I got the best of both worlds in terms of getting "agency experience" (learning to work with clients, sell and execute projects, etc) and being an in-house design team (seeing projects through, having common organizational goals to work toward, a strong team culture). The XD team here attracts and retains some of the most hard-working and talented folks I've met - partially due to the no-BS, get rewarded for good work expectations that have been established by the director and her leads. There is no room for ego-driven people to survive on the team.

Cons

From what I can tell the company has stabilized a lot since I've left, but there were typical problems that exist with a young product organization - unclear lines between the roles of product/design/eng ownership at the higher levels which trickled down to impact IC work. That being said, they had promising new hires in product and were taking the right steps for the right people (those who work hard and have the right expertise) to take on leadership roles.

Human Resources - Temp job

Pros

Nice people working there but cater too much to younger crowd

Cons

Ahold currently hires temporary employees and very seldom does the temp become permanent. The worst part about working at the corporate office is the "open environment" - there are no offices or cubicles everyone sits at a table with 5 or more other people, just them and their computer - no privacy whatsoever. If your "neighbor" has a cold and comes to work sneezing, coughing etc, you will get those germs all over you and your workspace.

Pros

Cool office, some people are nice

Cons

Lots of changes in leadership, and not for the better. Real boys club of southern white men who all worked at food lion together 30 years ago.
