Pros

Leadership is accessible and personable: My immediate management and leadership are extremely supportive and engaged. Akima leadership is constantly working on development, empowerment of both their employees and shareholders. Employees feel they are trusted and respected. Compensation is fair: I have witnessed leaders initiating market assessment so employees are well-compensated and rewarded. The company recognizes hard work and treats its employees as its most valuable resource. Great culture with clear mission from top down: passionate about giving back to our shareholders. In addition, management initiates a wide range of programs engaging employees to give back to the Shareholder community – from internships, mentorships to the most recent “Two Wheels, One Spirit”. CEO personally gets involved setting example of great energy and sense of collaboration to achieve the company’s goals above and beyond!! Management team are highly motivated, infusing positive energy to the whole company. I love coming to work at Akima!!

Cons

Because of rapid growth, scalability sometimes becomes an issue

This company is a joke

Pros

There are good people working there, just not enough of them and not where it matters.

Cons

Akima fosters a fake corporate environment where they pretend to empower shareholders. In fact it is mostly just a bunch of white folks who have found an easy way to make money from the 8(a) system. The whole executive team is dreadful. There is no motivation to stay with the company because they never promote within, the salaries are so bad. In fact, a while back, Glassdoor was such a problem for Akima that the CEO asked to find a way to find the people commenting on this site so he could get rid of them. I guess since then they have decided to ask current employees to write good reviews in order to improve their score. I have an idea! If you want to improve your score, maybe you should actually treat your employees right!

Akima Response

Thank you for taking time to write a review. We appreciate feedback from employees that helps the organization improve. We’re sorry to hear that your time at Akima did not match our intention of being a terrific place to build a career. As you know, Akima supports a family of more than 40 subsidiary companies that serve customers around the world, focused mostly on DoD and federal civilian programs. Only about a dozen of our subsidiaries are SBA 8(a) certified, while the rest compete as small businesses or have graduated the 8(a) program and are now successful large businesses. As a company, we’re guided by our mission and values, which stem from our only shareholders, the Iñupiat people of Northwestern Alaska. That means, Akima employees come to work every day knowing they have a real, positive impact on a rich heritage and culture. We try to promote a team environment that provides opportunities to grow with the company – many of our program and business managers were promoted from within. Also, we’re committed to employing shareholders and helping them advance their careers. To learn more about our shareholder programs, visit: www.akima.com/about/shareholder-programs. Thank you again for the feedback - we wish you the best of luck wherever your career takes you.

Great Place To Work!

Pros

As with any job, it is what you make it. If you’re willing to work hard and be held accountable for your results, this a great place to work. It doesn’t mean they expect perfection, just constant improvement. People I work with, flexibility to telework around “life events”, benefits, and an open-door policy Also, I wholeheartedly disagree with the negative “two wheels, one spirit” reviewer below. The pictures I’ve seen and the riders I’ve spoken with described a different experience than the disparaging review below. In addition, our CEO personally made two significant donations to make sure that the fundraiser met its goal of $100,000. This ensured they were able to give over $50,000 each to the organizations directly benefiting NANA Shareholders. Certainly not my definition of “selfish”. Just as importantly, this fundraiser connected Akima employees with our shareholder’s world. The daily team travel journal provided glimpses of a world far beyond the beltway where stores, supplies, and jobs are plentiful. It also raised our customers’ awareness of why we exist.

Cons

Constant drive to become more efficient.
