Pros

In a nutshell, it is difficult to understand ANCs outside looking in; it is hard to explain it from inside looking out. Many are quick to place judgement in haste without attempting to understand it first. I know, because I once was the one to do so when I stood outside looking in. Akima and its operating companies serve a mission in duality - it serves the alaskan native tribes through serving those who serve. As an insider I can say with utmost confidence that the company operates with high standard for ethics and integrity. They require hard work and performance expectations are high, but the rewards and opportunities for growth are there and abundant for those who seek them. You will get what you put in and be given a fair opportunity to suceed (or not). When you do good work, they will be noticed and rewarded just as the opposite will hold true. Benefits are decent; not the best or the worst and comparable to any large or mid-size business'.

Cons

Morale in Shared Services. While it is their job to provide the best customer service, there should be more efforts to acknowledge and recognize them more for their hard work. They do a lot for a lot of people. For other "cons", there are and will be frustrating days. There will be people you like and not. The expectation for performance will be high and if you don't like pressure or high optempo, this may not be a right fit. There are the typical "cons" from working in any company that also apply here but nothing I would say is specific to Akima (with caveat that each operating company has its own culture and intricacies people other than their employees can speak to). But generally speaking, if there are unresolved issues that have not been dealt with the company or supervisor directly and have to be written about it online, then I would say it may not be a company problem.

Great place to work

Pros

Akima offers a supportive work environment with a genuinely caring upper management team that is constantly looking to improve the company. In my experience, this has meant rewarding and motivating employees. The company offers a lot of flexibility for employees where possible. All of the management I have experienced really goes out of their way to give employees the ability to manage personal needs, which motivates me to give more effort and energy back as well. Since Akima is a parent company with lots of sub-companies in their fold, there are lots of career opportunities and directions for advancement for people wanting to put in the work. Lots of promoting from within to fill openings, too. Good benefits- in line with the industry. Committed to giving employees the tools to do our jobs. I've worked at companies where it was like pulling teeth to get the right equipment, software, etc- it's amazing how easy it is here. No crazy red tape- it is a small enough company to be flexible with that stuff.

Cons

With so many different business groups and sub-companies, I'm sure not everyone has the same caliber of experience. It's hard to be consistent with hundreds of employees. But my experience has been fantastic!

Great company to work for

Pros

Akima is a company which is exciting to work for because it's extremely nimble. Never a boring or dull moment, and there is seemingly always career/growth opportunities around the corner for those of us who work here. Additionally, for being so large, it feels remarkably small. One example of this is the amount of executive-access available to all levels of employees here. Most of us know the execs straight up through the CEO. Also I have to completely disagree with the person who posted about the "Two Wheels, One Spirit" fundraiser. Not only were they mistaken in the flight details and accommodations of the travelers (a daily journal was sent via email during the trip with photos disproving their description of the travel details), but also the company did a great thing for their shareholders and raised over $100,000 to donate to organizations to help them. This didn't appear to me to be self-serving in any way. I proudly donated to the cause, and would do so again.

Cons

No job is perfect, but I have to say I've been happier in this company than in any of my previous 4 or 5.
