Pros

Great amount of time off - after your first year you get 20 days (paid) off as a salaried employee. The 401k match was usually pretty generous, but the economy may have now changed things. Before I left, they changed the pension to allow you to be able to access it after your first year of working there (yes, they offered a pension AND a 401k). Managers were pretty flexible with time off at the time. You're pretty much guaranteed job security due to the amount of claims that tend to come in. You get to understand a product that everyone needs (insurance) better.

Cons

HEAVY workload. I don't think the leadership thinks realistically about how many people they should hire to help carry the workload. Our goals were pretty stringent and (again) based on some unrealistic attainments. An e-mail was once forwarded that you should never expect anything over an "Meets expectations," on your yearly review - this was sent as a joke but is more real than what you might think. If you are new, never expect to get any part of the week of thanksgiving off (except for Thanksgiving Day) or any part of the week of Christmas (except for Christmas day).

Pros

Gaining experience in the insurance field. Initial training opportunities. Networking enhancement through meeting new people within the insurance field. A solid base will be developed in the claims sector because you will work hard!

Cons

Lack of competitive pay among industry, heavy workloads and overtime needed to complete "satisfactory" job performance. Lack of ability to move within company even though that is stated as a company policy. Limited opportunities for advancement and lack of transparency when discussing these issues with employees.

Pros

It's a large company, so if you are mobile you may have a lot of opportunity. You may have the ability to go to different states or try different jobs within the company. There is also a sense of stablity since it's a large company,

Cons

The system is designed to hinder and not help. Management does not listen to the employees. They waste employees' time with surveys that they seem not to pay attention to. Certain regions and departments provide little to no growth opportunity. So you may get stuck in a position. An example would be the claims department, unless you are mobile. And each office seems to be managed differently. Some offices are way more lax then others. The pay is horrible. They pay the new claims employees under 40k, but want you to have a degree and work over 40 hours/week. Really does not seem fair. And the raises in our office at least are the same for mostly every one. Too much busy work, i.e. list and emails.
