Pros

I can hardly think of one. Maybe the discount? Hardly outweighs how poorly this company treats you.

Cons

oof, everything. Every aspect of this company is terrible. They treat you like you’re worthless and expendable. As long as you’re making them money, they love you, but the second you slip up or have an off day, you get written up. All of these positive reviews? We’re forced to write them because the company does things THAT EVERY OTHER COMPANY IS DOING for their employees and we’re supposed to be celebrating the fact that they have a shred of humanity? We’re required to write positive reviews. Don’t believe it. The CEO called us all selfish on one of his conference calls and said he would not be prioritizing getting our pay back to what it was pre Covid-19. Don’t do it. You will regret it. It will be the worst decision you ever make for your mental health and professional growth. This place is toxic. Please believe me, the positive reviews are not telling you the truth.

Pros

The girls you work with. They're wonderful and try so hard.

Cons

Everything. Stay away from this place. They promise you the moon, paint a beautiful picture of giving back and happy Christian store but in reality you're going to be worked to death. I made the mistake of continuing this job while I was pregnant. I fainted at work while my DM was there. Told to get back to work. Vomiting? Get back to work. 12 hour days, overnights. Have a doctor appointment? Have to use vacation or sick time. No leeway from the district due to my situation, I had a miscarriage at work. Was told to work until my replacement for the day could arrive. I walked out. Who does that? Who forces a miscarrying woman to work the sales floor during her miscarriage as opposed to seek medical attention? I begged my DM to make an exception. No. So I quit on the spot and only regret working in this nightmare to begin with.

Pros

Gave me a whole new perspective on what to look for in an employer

Cons

I left my role at Altar’d State about six months ago after working in the Home Office Marketing Department for 2+ years. I’m sharing this now with a clear head in hopes it helps others considering a position there. Before accepting my role, I read reviews on Glassdoor and dismissed the negative ones as emotional venting. I now understand many of those accounts were accurate. My time at Altar’d State had moments of growth and connection, but was consistently overshadowed by anxiety and stress, largely due to the CEO, Aaron Walters. Toxic leadership behavior was normalized, including public shaming, verbal intimidation, and sudden terminations. Meetings regularly ran late into the evening without notice. Staff were expected to cancel personal plans and attend weekend meetings, often unpaid. During one such meeting, a group of interns was kept until 9:30 PM without food, while being lectured and served wine. Incidents like this were not uncommon. The culture discouraged boundaries and fostered fear. Leadership justified this as “the retail industry,” insisting it was worth it for the exposure and opportunity. In reality, it came at the cost of employees’ wellbeing and personal lives. If you're considering a job here, a few things to note: The company promotes Christian values, but the internal culture often contradicts them. If relocating, be sure you truly want to live in Knoxville. It is not worth the move for this role alone. Flexibility is minimal. Leadership dictates the schedule, and personal obligations are often seen as secondary. Eventually, the stress impacted my health. I realized no job, no matter how creative or rewarding parts of it seemed, was worth the toll it took on my mental and physical wellbeing. If you do accept a role, document everything and protect your boundaries. Know that you deserve to be treated with respect, and that it is possible to find a workplace where you are.
