Pros

Great relationships with the girls who worked with me. Clothes and visuals in the store were beautiful. Discounts were ok, but based on pay still couldnt afford to buy clothes.

Cons

I came to Altard State after moving post college graduation and was familiar with the brand from where I lived before. I also had a couple years of retail experience and some in previous management positions. That being said here's the honest truth from our store: First off pay was a joke, given our geographic location, it was not a liveable wage. I was working in management and making jut a couple dollars more than some of the brand reps. I had no work-life balance and requesting off or asking to work around commitments was like jumping through hoops. Work weeks were crazy. I was still hourly and working more than 40 hours each week then getting yelled at for going into overtime, but if I didnt work past those 40 hours I "didnt care" and "wasnt doing enough for the store". Other people in management only cared about themselves and did not care about the store and would constantly talk about other employees behind their back. I found out she was lying to upper management about other managers and making us look bad by placing all the store's problems on us. It was infuriating because of how much work I did put into the store, and the DM would have seen that if she really even cared about our store. I was told I would be promoted and then never heard from the DM again. I didnt mind though because talking to the DM was always an awful experience, she would belittle and talk condescendingly to me every single time. Im an adult and wanted to be talked to like one, not get an attitude and place blame on people. When I put my two weeks in after getting a position in a career that my degree was in I was basically chastised even though I followed the procedure for leaving. It was so bad that I didnt even want to finish my two weeks. Leaving was the best decision I made. Hands down. For a company that relies so heavily on their Christian values, they certainly do not follow them when it comes to their employees. I found out that the store wasnt doing the volunteer hours and not actually donating any of the money they made on Mission Mondays because the new store manager wasnt acting in connecting with the charities they choose from the community.

Overworked and Underpaid

Pros

I enjoyed what I thought the company stood for. I also love some of the connections I made. I really wish I could write more.

Cons

I worked here for a year and a half. I was told by the store manager who hired me that I would be promoted within six months. After six months, my store manager left me. She failed to teach me anything I needed and told me about how at Summit, they were asked to write nice reviews to push down the negative ones. She was leaving because she felt the company didn't truly care about their people. I wasn't sent another store manager to train me and my DM only visited once with upper management. I overworked and was underpaid from May until July, having corporate visits that went well (with promise that I would be promoted soon). I didn't get any compensation for running the store. I didn't expect it, because I expected a promotion. Instead, I was pushed back down to an assistant with a store manager who was "trained" for two weeks in other stores. She was from outside of the company, despite being told that they really love promoting within. She was a terrible manager, due to her setting up the store team against each other and pinning anything that was wrong on anyone but herself. She would work 60 hour work weeks with nothing to show because she wasn't doing anything. She spent hours on the store phone with other store managers, just talking (I witnessed these conversations 5 out of 7 days a week). She wasn't about team building, which I think is what Altard State should be looking for. She pushed me down in my development and talked negatively about me to all of upper management. The sad part is, it seemed like not one DM or VDM ever came to even see my work ethic. They just took her word until our recent change of DM, which by that point, I had already began my journey to secure another job. I feel like I was put in a role without the proper pay, and then after I built an entire team, it was ripped away for someone who was not a quality manager from outside of the company. I really hope that Altard State doesn't put other ASM's in this position, because it's not a good feeling and left a bad taste in my mouth.

Thank you for your submission. Reading your review was very concerning and we apologize for your experience. As a seven year old company, we are promoting from within often and have District Managers, Buyers, Assistant Buyers, Marketing team members, and Store Operations staff all promoted from within. Investing in two District Managers per district was intended to provide a greater focus on people and their development. Unfortunately, this does not seem to have happened. I would be very open to speaking to better understand how we may improve the experience and thank you for your honesty. Have a great day and we hope that you will continue to stand out for good within your community.

Don't apply to altar'd state

Pros

No Positives in any shape or form.

Cons

This is hands down the worst company I have ever worked for in my years of retail management. Zero work life balance, more all nighters than anyone should ever have to do without proper staffing hours to complete or help from upper management, and upper management that says one thing and does another. I was shocked with the amount of disorganization and carelessness that comes from a company that claims Christian values. Upper management consistently changes things without any notice and then bully's managers into working on unrealistic tasks. This company is a joke and has no values or morals. Do yourself a favor and do not apply. They recently asked managers to add positive reviews so they didn't look so bad on here. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Thanks for your submission and we appreciate your insight! As a former Store Manager, we hope that you recognize that our give back programs, volunteerism efforts, and partnerships with countless local organizations across the country are ways in which AS supports the communities in which we live and work. 40 hr scheduled required workweeks, reduced medical and health care costs, 4 week paid sabbatical programs, paid volunteerism hours, and a Student Debt repayment program are all part of our ongoing commitment to our associates' growth and development. In no way has the Company added or changed any reviews. The value of a site like Glass Door is that associates all have an equal voice and opportunity to share their experiences. We wish you much success in the future and a terrific holiday! Thanks Again for taking the time to respond!
