No respect for staff

Pros

Good pay, decent benefits. I had some pretty fantastic co workers.

Cons

I worked in the political advocacy department at NPAD. My time at this department was not pretty. Around 20 people left in 2021, the vast majority of those people being women of color. Staff in general continuously felt very discouraged, because they joined this org thinking it had the resources to allow them to do impactful work for their/other communities. But there is an extreme culture of no and the window of what is allowed for a campaign is extremely limited- no long term, deep community work. We bulldoze into a community, drop a couple thousand on digital ads, and claim the win if there is one. For a group of advocates, that is a pretty difficult and unstrategic method of working. Working at this organization was depressing. Seeing so many woman of color leave because they were treated with disrespect and were treated as admin rather than movement leaders. If you are reading this and you are someone who hates the non profit industrial complex, avoid the ACLU at all costs.

Awful Place to Work

Pros

Really only the name recognition.

Cons

I have never worked in such a toxic environment and with so many coworkers who were unhappy. I wouldn't recommend working here to anyone. The ACLU is also one of the most self aggrandizing institutions I have ever had the displeasure of being in. The attorneys don't respect support staff, management is a mess, and HR is useless. It is appalling how people who work here profit and make a career out of pursuing social justice while at the same time treating their staff in ways antithetical to their public image. Employees are racist, elitist, and transphobic. Their inability to acknowledge and address the ways in which they are invested in, and profit from, power structures is utterly embarrassing. If you work here, you will be disrespected, dehumanized, overworked, underpaid, gaslit, tokenized, and subject to uncomfortable, awkward social interactions.
