Pros

There are some improvements internally to create a better workplace with things like employee resource groups, pay scales, and talent pipelines for some staff, but many of these programs are more for the appearance of inclusivity rather than real, meaningful change and reflection on work practices that are in line with their external values.

Cons

Management across the org and states are resistant to union efforts, ranging from stalling tactics designed to lose as little power as possible to out right retaliation and harassment. There is no real intention to make real efforts to restructure or even change how the work is funded or resourced. But they dont tell you that in the beginning, so it seems like they would be open to internal change because of what they say to the public and donors. But its mostly BS so just work there if you want to or need to, but know they are just as much hypocrites about social justice as any other employer.

Lost Its Way

Pros

The ACLU plays a very important political and legal role in this country. I was always proud to say I worked there, especially in the wake of 9/11. Also, they have a nap room.

Cons

There is a continuing misery among much of the staff. The higher-ups claim to care about you as a person and your professional development, but they don't. Anthony Romero is a charlatan -- the whole place went downhill after Ira Glasser left.

Decent benefits package and salary.

Lack of support from senior leadership, no room for growth, understaffed teams & overworked teams, lack of transparency in decision making, poor communication from management, lack of respect for support level staff.
