Pros

Amgen is a place that is hard to leave. The people are generally nice (if you don't work in Thousand Oaks) and the benefits are the absolute best. Everyone gets 5 weeks of vacation plus a good health plan. Most people are only working 40 hours a week and everyone gets a year-end bonus unless you are really screwing up.

Cons

The biggest downside is lack of career advancement. If I stay at Amgen for another 5 years, I will likely be in the same position for all 5 years. The only opportunity I will get for a promotion is if my boss leaves or is promoted. Of course then I will be competing with everyone else in my group for that one spot. If you don't get it, keep waiting. It doesn't matter how well I perform as there are very few manager positions and those managers have a sweet deal so why would they leave. This is probably more true for people working outside of TO but it still sucks just the same. If the benefits weren't so good, I would have left. But it's hard to leave a really comfortable dead-end job paying reasonably well with 5 weeks vacation and only needing 40 work hours a week.

Pros

Decent benefits despite cutbacks. Overall work-life balance is great. Compensation is above average. Many opportunities to expand knowledge and growth. If you want to learn how to do things right the first time, it's a good place to be.

Cons

Career-wise, mobility (vertical, horizontal) is limited. Current events have had a significant negative impact to business and organizational practice in the company. This has impact on morale, job satisfaction, more interoffice gossip/politics and job security.

Pros

Amgen has a great 401K matching program, a stellar educational reinbusement program, good on-site training, and is a great place to work if you want to maximize your professional growth.

Cons

Amgen is IT hostile, so if you are an IT professional, look elsewhere. Compensation for IT is about 15-20% less than industry, with the company making up the gap with a performance based bonus....which is not guaranteed. Executive and Senior Management is completely incompetent and not equipped to make the decisions that they are making. The best decription of the Management style that predominates Amgen is 'highly immature'. Blame is the driver - not getting blamed while blaming others. The organiztion is highly political with employees that can play the politics correctly being promoted over staffers with better qualifications and experience. That being said, an internal promotion is the exception - not the rule - as an external candidate is always preferred. So, if you are expecting career advancement, Amgen is not the place for you.
