Pros

Great benefits and reasonable salary. Everyone that works there is highly competent, and the job you are doing really makes a difference.

Cons

Amgen is currently going through financial difficulties and it shows. I had worked as an intern one year and have since been unable to obtain an additional internship despite good recommendations and a seemingly good interview process. HR has been thoroughly downsized and they never seem to know what is going on with their internship program.

Pros

the company does a very good job of making it worthwhile to work here. The benefits packages are almost unmatched in my experience, although they have become somewhat less lucrative in recent years as cost cutting measures have led to the increase in copays and cost of coverage to the employee. However, it is still very inexpensive relative to most other companies. The company does still try (on a severely reduced basis) to have fun, and make opportunities for employees to gather outside of work hours, and the pay is good, if not great. Overall, the company is one that I would recommend to people with certain qualifications and in certain areas. Particularly, Associate level or higher, Science based careers, and IT. Fitness facilities are pretty hard to beat.

Cons

The atmosphere lately is one of frustration. There is severely limited growth potential within the company (capped at 10% within a group to be promoted per year), and VERY few opportunities for advancement, or lateral movement in the current status of the company. This can- and in many cases has- lead to frustration and infighting within groups. Job and budget cuts have led to a deer-in-the-headlights mentality for many employees who are trying to find work elsewhere in a market flooded with all those people who used to work here, or a perceived necessity to throw others under the train in an attempt to not get run over. Food service is very expensive, especially considering it is supposedly subsidized by the company.

Pros

In my job searches I could not find a company that paid more or gave better benefits than I receive at Amgen. We do a lot of fun things within our smaller groups and with the whole department/site. This helps build morale. My group in particular is very tight nit and I enjoy my coworkers.

Cons

The current state of the industry has cut some of the group spending. It has also dropped our stock prices. Sometimes it can feel as if though you are disconnected from the company since it is "corporate" at times.
