High Stress Environment

Pros

Some of the positive reviews have it right, there are a lot of perks to working at Amida. Most of which are pretty common amongst big and small companies in this day and age. It has a great location, flexible vacation policy and decent pay.

Cons

I held back on writing a review until I saw the overly positive reviews that look like they were written by senior management, probably by direction of the CEO. When I worked there the company had a laughably high turnover rate, which... as others have pointed out was largely due to the CEO's management style. The hostile work environment is not one that I felt like I could learn and grow in.

Love my job, love my team

Pros

Aside from good benefits and awesome colleagues, I would say the thing that sets Amida apart is the combination of high expectations paired with a supportive culture. Some days are tough, and long, and frustrating - absolutely. But everyone from the top to the bottom recognizes that burnout is a real thing, that life outside work can be all-consuming at times, and that occasionally you just need some space. Lots of places offer work from home options, generous leave policies, etc., but at Amida there is an intangible atmosphere of support, concern, appreciation, and respect that is second to none. Add to that a great team, interesting work, and the thrill of seeing ideas become reality on a weekly basis.

Cons

The hours are long. There are menial tasks involved (for everyone, not just junior employees). Being a startup, it's not a good fit for everyone, and departures can be disruptive to such a small team. Few things go according to plan. And to address the elephant in the room - no, no one agrees with absolutely every decision that is made. I won't speak for those who have chosen to leave, but I can say that lots of us here deeply enjoy working at Amida.

Startup Culture - For Better or For Worse

Pros

Amida's greatest strength by far is the extremely talented employees. This is a highly collaborative organization, and my coworkers are constantly helping me improve. In addition, the mentorship opportunities are incredible, and include not only members of the Amida senior staff and board, but also other high-profile individuals in a number of fields. Beyond the staff, the work we do is interesting, stimulating, ever-changing, and impactful. It is definitely a change from the non-profit or government space, but in a good way. There's no red tape, and you can see pretty immediate results. The office is in a great location in downtown DC, and Amida takes care of its employees with lots of perks, including plentiful pantry options and benefits you might otherwise see in a much larger company (401K, health insurance, tech budget). My experience here has been overwhelmingly positive. I highly recommend working here - if you are committed to working really hard for a cause that you believe in.

Cons

As mentioned in some of the other reviews, Amida is not a cakewalk. This is a startup, and we have to produce excellent work to continue our prosperity - there's not room to rest on our laurels. Our work culture reflects this - "get your stuff done" is the rule we live by (and die by, for some folks). Stress levels can be high, especially as deliverable deadlines get closer, but it's balanced with less intense days where you can grab lunch with coworkers or leave in time for happy hour. However, this isn't the type of office that can support someone who surfs the web all day or expects a 30 hour workweek, and unfortunately, that's reflected in some of the negative reviews. Yes, "perfect" is the standard, and it can be a very tough standard to achieve. Even for those who did not continue working at Amida, the management is committed to finding a good career fit somewhere else, and this is true of everyone who has left the company. Have there been days where I want to scream and rip my hair out? Sure. But, I have never been at a job where I have been more excited about getting up and going to work every single day. Please don't let the bitter reviews deter you from this incredible opportunity.
