Having a hard time competing.

Pros

Honestly wants to change the face of public education, and has a lot of great ideas for doing so. Many of the long term employees have devoted their lives to education reform. The goals of the company are admirable.

Cons

Trying to be structured like a startup, but with non-competitive salaries (for technical roles at least) and no equity, so there’s not a lot of upside potential. Also may be shooting too far ahead of the market to be able to be profitable any time soon. Attracts people dedicated to the field over people capable of delivering on the big ideas. Struggling to maintain good office culture and to hang on to talent.

Pros

Some great people and a worthwhile mission to use technology in education. Lots of flexibility about workday and work-from-home.

Cons

Executive management made up of educators, not business people. Unqualified leadership made made bad decisions, or no decisions at all. Eventually most of the company was laid off and many products were shut down.

Pros

Awesome people who really care about the students, opportunity to build some really really cool and innovative things in collaboration with some really talented people, many opportunities to playtest with real kids, great mentorship from an awesome CTO

Cons

dealing with inter-team dependencies could be incredibly unwieldy at times, had to make decisions based on little information - this was prior to the buyout in Oct 2015 - things have substantially improved since then (compensation/benefits have improved as well)
