An Incredible Place to Grow Your Skills

Pros

I have worked at Path for just over two years.  In that time I’ve been able to grow my responsibilities, and compensation, significantly.  Unlike a number of my co-workers, and, it seems, some of the people who have written reviews for Path here on Glassdoor, I have a lot of experience in the workplace outside of this company.  I’ve worked in a number of industries (publishing, journalism, public relations) for over a dozen different employers, so I think I have some perspective on this place that others might find useful.   I’ll just say it—I have rarely *ever* experienced a more dynamic, supportive and challenging place to work.  The people that work here and stay are truly special.  Smart as hell, no drama, extremely competent and professional.  They work as a team, and they actually like each other.  Honestly, this place has an incredible social community that is not at all common in my experience.   They throw company happy hours and movie nights and whathaveyou in the front-of-the house lounge, but they also sponsor free fitness classes that a surprising number of people attend, even lazy slobs like me. I think this says a lot about the place. Path employees tend to see this as a place worth investing themselves in.  I like that.

Cons

There is no getting around that this is an intense place to work.  The company is run by hands-on executives and managers who are passionate about their work—and expect you to be too.  They set very high standards for the work they do on behalf of their clients, so this can mean some long hours, but the leave policy is generous and flexible.  It also means that, yes, of course, you have to be accountable for your efforts, but I’ve actually found the time tracking to be really helpful for keeping me focused on the tasks that are actually important for our clients and revenue-generating for the company. Otherwise, you’re just ping-ponging from one squeaky wheel to the next.

Terrible Culture

Pros

They have great insurance and benefits, unlimited PTO, and they pay fair salaries.

Cons

You were encouraged to NOT use your PTO, and expected to work 50+ hours a week. Everyone was burnt out and management didn’t care. The culture was the most unwelcoming I’ve ever experienced- if you were new and not part of the club, they wouldn’t talk to you. I literally cried many times because of how people treated me. They are not honest with their employees, and have done several rounds of layoffs in the last few years. I was part of that, and it was a blessing to be away from this terrible company

Avoid if possible

Pros

Open office in central area of the Flatiron District is attractive. Opportunity to work on wide ranging account types can be a great learning experience.

Cons

Hours are long for many employees excluding management. Communication is shoddy and employees can be cliquish. Compensation is below industry standard. Longterm employees don't get just desserts without threatening to leave. Benefits are sub par & employee expenses related to benefits are costly. If you're a "bro", you'll fit it culturally and have the best chance of getting compensated well. Qualified and hard working employees can be fired without notice; oftentimes over "senior" employees who make critical and costly errors. Some of the newer sales staff could benefit from intense training. Packages are sold without the input of teams often to the detriment of the company and client. Overselling and under delivering is common here. If you're not in sales, be careful not to get caught in the trap of prepping a deck, pitching, and providing strategy for a new client only to have sales get the credit (and pay)! Office morale peaks and wanes depending on the mood of the CEO & President. One of the two aforementioned individuals chucked a writing instrument at an employee during a client call with impunity. The at will nature of the employment relationship is volatile. They will make irrational decisions. Their decisions will affect the manner in which you work and they will dispose of you at their leisure. Client calls are routinely over attended and with the presence of a principal, can make the company seem small. If you are considering working for Path, do so knowing you're in for scattered and unfocused leadership. Be prepared for numerous unguided and often conflicting directives. While there are intelligent and dedicated employees, those are few (very few) and far between.
