Pros

You usually have the coolest sounding job in the room. You get to meet a lot of people, sometimes even cool ones.

Cons

Your job owns you. You get vacation....but can only take it as they say you can, and if there is someone with more seniority, no dice on that day off. They tell you that you will miss birthdays, holidays and you will kill someone. It is all true. When you start, you are on the extra board, meaning on call 24/6. You're paid a 40 hour grantee, of course paid more if you work more. No sick time (we will see what the new contract brings). You will be dealing with constantly poorly maintained equipment, and sometimes utterly incompetent co-workers.

Pros

-Wonderful insurance for single and family plans. -Great pay, including entry level. -Unionized

Cons

-Micromanagement -Extra board (new hires), you are on call, requires you to have your bag packed. -Trains can be very late, you are expected to work until you arrive at your final destination.

Pros

IIJA funding for new projects has re-energized mission driven workforce. People at Amtrak are supportive and nice to work with. People like to see others succeed and grow their careers. Corporate values implemented several years back are sticking and have been the driving force of positive culture change.

Cons

Sometimes extremely slow decision making by senior leaders across the org. While the organization says they like to empower managers and leaders, the organization cycles through empowering managers to make decisions and then reverts back to executives needing to make decisions which can slow the entire process down. Post-COVID work environment has gotten a bit crazy - everyone is in back to back meetings, all meetings run over, and employees need to be careful of burnout. Growing pains to support rapid pace of hiring for IIJA projects and support.
