Pros

Good pay for a young person starting at the entry level out of high school, you can make a lot of money working aboard the train. Benefits include 401K, health insurance, and railroad retirement as well as free or reduced travel for employees and spouse/dependents.

Cons

Invest in good shoes, you will be expected to stand the entire day (up to 20 hour days) and function on 4-5 hours of sleep. Also, forget about having a personal life, the work/life balance for OBS agreement employees is extremely poor. Amtrak does not like to share and wants 100% of your time especially during the 120-day probationary period, even if you are in the military and have drill or annual training, be prepared to get surprised looks when you have duty. If you work this job, do not get sick either.

Pros

Okay pay. Strong relationships with the good employees.

Cons

Extremely demanding lifestyle. A lack of communication between management and employees. Very poor morale – a lot of employees simply don’t care about good customer service or professional development. Many times, people would look down on my commitment to the company's mission and passenger needs. I was legitimately embarrassed on multiple occasions from my co-workers actions and attitudes in front of passengers. I got in legitimate fights with my co-workers just trying to keep passengers informed during delays. Working hard is not valued. Many employees seemed fine with just avoiding passengers and conflict during these situations, exacerbating the situation. Amtrak is not a freight railroad. Boxcars don't wonder why they inexplicably stop and wait a hour on a siding. Passengers do. The level of communication between employees and passengers is deplorable. Airlines are so much better at customer service.

Pros

To the "employee" who said: "“I'm ashamed to tell people I work for Amtrak - I usually say I work somewhere else.” Quit and go work for McDonalds, flip burgers, clean houses, or pole dance! If you are ashamed, you are in the wrong field. Many people want to work for Amtrak. HR received over 2000+ applications for recent Conductor Trainee positions and there were only 12 spots. Don't blame Amtrak for your woes; blame US government who would rather give billions to foreign countries without blinking an eye, while Amtrak must beg and plead for money every year. Its all priorities!

Cons

Extra board can be annoying!
