Pros

The pay rate allows me to have a job that actually pays a living wage. The atmosphere is very friendly and family orientated.

Cons

The time you spend away from home can be a burden, but if you can stay prepared it can be worked out.

Toxic, Hostile Work Environment

Pros

Pay is ok when offered overtime. (I Can't think of much else that is positive)

Cons

Abuse of power & toxic leadership. Unqualified management & Unqualified employees jeopardize the safety of passengers and other workers. Managers are not subjected to the same testing as those who actually work on the railroad, so most of them do not know or understand their own job! Promotions are based on who you know, not what you know. Managers are threatened by employees with more experience so they harass and try to intimidate them. The Ethics hotline is a joke, and it is government waste. Reporting issues to EEO only leads to retaliation & more toxicity at work. (It is not anonymous like Amtrak claims it is) Labor Employees are the scapegoats for things management does that are wrong. They take no responsibility for anything when its negative but have no problem taking credit for the positive work done by employees. MONEY, NOT SAFETY is the MAIN PRIORITY at Amtrak. Everyone knows that most people in management do not do their job! (Probably because they don't know how) This is Evident anytime you call anywhere in that company. Either no one answers or they don't know how to answer questions you ask them! (I challenge anyone who reads this to test this)

Pros

Steady pay and benefits, as is typical to government employment.

Cons

Benefits decreasing with time. Unstable work hours, even for salaried managers. Lack of upper management support. Lack of effective training. Job duties not properly prioritized. Lack of creative thinking or progressive ideas to improve the company and the rail industry in general. Overflow of redundant middle and upper management positions.
