Pros

A good income can be earned working for the railroad.

Cons

Not the place to be if you're a self-starter and highly motivated. The majority of people around you are not, and you will become very frustrated by the lack of productivity and drive amongst your colleagues.

Pros

If one keeps their nose clean, and has a basic to medium skill set in electricical maintenance, can stand a few years working nights to start off, though for a good decade not be able to count on weekends off-day-shift - then this can be a satisfying job. A union shop. ....

Cons

....with not much brotherhood going on - disinterest, cliques, an IBEW system council that is so-so. There are a fair number of coworkers, from various crafts, that make the work-life more than bearable. Most of management borders on inept, alas, enough coworkers also.
