Pros

Meet new people and travel often.

Cons

The wear and tear on your body is not worth the pay. Terrible sleep and downtime schedules, dangerous diesel fumes and other chemicals you are force to breathe in and always having stressors regarding air-conditioning and toilet failure. There is no security or police onboard so we are always in danger of armed trespassers boarding at any scheduled stop. Congress approved 66 billion dollars to Amtrak in 2021. However, All of that money is gone and unaccounted for without any accountability. Amtrak continues to fire good employees and operate broken equipment. The train staff is under paid while the manager's pocket bonuses and grant money. Even after a strike the on-board staff contract is still in litigations without any pay increase.

Pros

Free train travel is a huge plus. If you can make a career out of it the railroad pension is huge. Pay can be good.

Cons

Little standardization on how buying processes are done, which role is responsible for what. After i started i almost immediate had to start working 50-60 hour weeks (by week 3). Not sustainable
