Pros

Unlike previous places I had worked, people did walk out the door at 5 o'clock and there was not a lot of pressure to work weekends.

Cons

I had a very poor experience at this company. I was promised a standard bonus, which I never received. I did not receive any salary increases over several years. I felt that management did not respect my expertise in my field, which was a pity, because this caused me some dissatisfaction in my job. I felt that my supervisor, who was generally out of the office and hard to reach, had no interest in seeing my career advance and so gave me high marks on my annual evaluations but then failed to give me any suggestion that there would be a future title promotion or salary adjustment.

Pros

The senior management has a lot of experience and is steering the company in the right direction. They also employ very talented people and understand the need for a home/work balance. It is also a moderately relaxed environment and many of the employees have worked there for many years.

Cons

The products/services offered can quickly become stale to work with. In general, the industry is usually behind the times in many areas and this company is no stranger to that disease. Opportunities for advancement depend on your department, but are generally slim. The pay is fair to average. There is often "red tape" where it does not need to be and sometimes a lack of experience in jobs where it is crucially needed.

Pros

Reputation of company, benefits (Medical, stock purchase plan, 401(k), etc), location. Employees are doing work that is meaningful and challenging. There is opportunity to move to other departments, depending on your manager. In a troubled economy, my position was stable.

Cons

Each department worked in a silo, no information sharing. The department I worked in did not plan well for customer needs, which required employees to work overtime on a regular basis. Most overtime could have been avoided by better planning and giving more authority to senior underwriters. Employees with families were "allowed" to leave on time and single employees were expected to stay and complete projects.
