Pros

-Challenging work requiring abstract thinking and analytical skills -Exciting (low code) industry with very promising future -Project based work, so the work experience will vary -Opportunity to travel and not get stuck working in the same office day to day (if that's important to you) -Professional experience in developing front facing client skills, agile software delivery, and Appian platform development experience (which is a marketable skill set outside of working at the company)

Cons

-Appian is a more sales centric organization than a product centric/ customer focused company -Limited technical professional development experience outside of learning the Appian platform/ SAIL -Promotions require building and presenting a "portfolio" to a committee for consideration -Professional Services (PS) has limited input/ say over product roadmap (owned primarily by the engineering team) -Unclear business strategy/ competing revenue streams within the company -Lack of enforced best practices/ design paradigms across projects, long hours, and challenging timelines resulting in low quality applications delivered to clients. PS focuses on short delivery timelines to realize the value proposition of low code software development at the expense of application quality -Senior leadership openly discusses plans to eliminate the PS arm of the company, creating lots of confusion and lowered morale among PS consultants

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with a review, as we value and consider all feedback. I’m sorry to see that you had a mixed experience during your time here. However, many of your comments do not accurately represent our strategy, and I’d like to address a few of them: Although our primary focus when employees first join Appian is to gain experience with our product, Appian consultants are exposed to many technologies and verticals through their varied project work and have increased responsibilities as their skills develop over time. We offer multiple defined career paths for consultants to pursue their interests, including a technical-focused track which requires expertise in general enterprise technologies in addition to Appian and an industry-focused track allowing specialization in certain industries. We have no plans to eliminate our professional services function. Our partner network is strong and we will continue to invest in it; however, our PS department plays a major role in our strategy and we have significant growth plans for 2019.

Pros

Nice offices and perks. Nice engineers. Good place to get some experience with a growing company.

Cons

Product Misconceptions, a lot of propaganda, and much domineering one-upsmanship all over. For example, Appian (and others) claims to be a low code development environment, but in my role, it was anything but if you wanted to configure robust workflows. The out of the box apps were way too generic and had little functionality. When giving demos we were instructed not to show how to configure using code, which is really the only way to build some apps. By saying things over and over again, the managers believed that we would eventually think these things were true. If we ever tried to demo outside of the corporate guidelines, we were reprimanded. So, no room for creativity and not the place to be if you have trouble with overbearing authority. Senior execs are sleazy and disconnected with a younger workforce.

Thank you for sharing your experience. You should know we take reviews here very seriously. However, we are having a hard time with a reply unless we know which role and department you work within, as we have several positions at Appian that work on demos with our clients. Appian does emphasize building with its drag and drop interface over using code, since our focus is on low-code development. We pride ourselves in creating an environment that fosters creativity and growth (both vertically and horizontally), and encourage you to share feedback with your direct manager so we can work to make change.

We appreciate you sharing your experience at Appian! As we continue to grow as an organization, it is our mission to spread our unique company spirit and culture across all of our offices. Thus, we are happy to hear you find the environment to be filled with good vibes and energy! We also agree with your note regarding the employees here -- we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for the talented and brilliant minds that make up Appian.
