Pros

The people that work here are amazing and full of ideas. Most* managers encourage sharing new ideas.

Cons

RTC is nice, however , many employees make a long commute from DC. I'd recommend relocating to the Arlington-DC Metro Area. Benefits are pretty sub par for the tech industry (15 PTO Days, no HSA contribution, fitness reimbursement).

Pros

Genuinely kind coworkers who want to help you be well. A culture truly open to feedback and improvement - the C level folks demand it. Underdog status (for now) keeps hubris out and innovation levels high. Despite underdog status, the software is truly spectacular and used by many huge, influential organizations around the world. Fast paced culture, nothing is ever stale here. Also, breakfast served on Mondays. Nummy. Lovely office, team dedicated to employee career growth, everyone here has a solid tenure - always a good sign. The company also pays for you and your family to go to an annual company retreat! Fun for all!

Cons

Benefits/PTO could be better. Reston Town Center location can be far for true DC residents. Expense system and system to log hours suck - but that's not Appian software. Appian just needs to boot it for something better.

Pros

1. Generally helpful colleagues 2. Monday breakfasts! 3. Decent pay, especially if this is your first job 4. You will get the tools you need to get your job done well 5. Really nice office at HQ 6. Appian is a terrific product!!

Cons

1. Horrendous benefits compared to other software companies, especially because the bulk of them hinge on the promise of options when/if the company goes public 2. Extremely young managers who publicly shame members of the team during meetings. The maturity level to handle tough situations is not there for some teams 3. Undefined culture. During my interview, I was told new ideas would be welcomed. They're not. Some team leaders will not welcome change, even if it's for the better.

Appian Response

Thank you for your feedback on your experience at Appian. Stock options, really nice offices, Monday breakfast, these don't sound so bad. You could have also mentioned tuition reimbursement for continuing education, the Appian MBA Program, commuter benefits, exceptional events, and great health care. Or the free Honest Tea and drinks. But we're not trying to get people to stay at work 24x7 by recreating the entire outside world inside our four walls (like some tech companies). We locate our offices in great places for people to work and play and encourage people to enjoy them. New people of all ages have the opportunity to quickly rise to management of people or programs at Appian (not the same thing, not everyone aspires to lead people) on the strength of their ideas. We remind everyone to praise in public and criticize in private. But we also encourage open discussion to achieve consensus. People always deserve respect and the Appian MBA Program provides advanced management training in how to create an atmosphere conducive to innovation in our fast-paced workplace. -Michael, CTO & Co-founder
