Ok but not great

Pros

Great place to learn cool new technology. As a platform, they might not have the numbers of a Salesforce, but they make up for it by being more cohesive.

Cons

If you're favored, you have no reason to dislike the company. They have tons of really rough-around-the-edges, less than pleasant, even deadweight management sticking around, without really contributing much just because they've been there forever. If you're not favored, you have an uphill battle in front of you. A lot of it could be growing pains for a company growing from a small, smart but not very well known entity to a medium to large company in the northern va area, but, between the IPO, the mistrust of most new hires, the micro-managing styles of most managers, the company is on the downhill.

Unorganized Department but Great Culture

Pros

Appian in general is a great place to work, feels vibrant, energetic, people are nice and the culture is great. I feel totally relaxed when it comes to my work dynamic with others and my ability to properly balance work/life.

Cons

It is incredibly frustrating to see good people leave because of unfair compensation/unclear growth. The team as a whole does not feel organized, it seemed like there was movement towards that but no real improvements. The floating holiday policy is very limiting, never seen that before at any other companies I've worked at where you can choose when to take your floating holiday. At Appian, you only get to choose between 6 pre-decided holidays unless they fall on a weekend. You can use it for your own birthday but only on the day it is happening and if it's on a weekday and for cultural/religious reasons as long as the manager approves. This is so incredibly limiting and I don't understand the reason behind it.

Pros

Great co-workers. Good Culture. Except for commuting, good location within Reston Towncenter. company is on the rise Breakfasts on Mondays Fun events planned routinely Spring getaway weekend vacation for employee's Gym on site at HQ or you get a stipend towards your own gym fees Quarterly recognition awards program

Cons

Only 8 paid Holidays. I would recommend 2 floating use it or lose it holidays. Not all employee's celebrate Christmas and their Holidays are just as important. Time off plans are not competitive with other companies operating in the same market. It's also sort of a use it or lose it feeling whereas you can only carryover up to 7 days into the next year. I personally would prefer to not lose it on Jan 1 each year and take time off in Q1 when my work load lower compared to the rest of the year. Paid only monthly I feel the pay scale for entry/low level employees is good, but increases for higher level employee's drastically slows down. No additional incentive provided once you earn a certain amount and have to have your name out there and know what competitors are offering.

Appian Response

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of your experience at Appian. Wage compression is an issue any growing company faces -- and in a good economy more so. You say you've been here less than a year so I'd say stay tuned -- additional incentives to stay with Appian will take many forms -- from higher pay, to more interesting work, better benefits, extraordinary events, better food, better office space, better tech, additional stock options, to name just a few.
