Pros

Appian has great technology that has significant advantages over its competition. Appian is extremely agile in its ability to deliver its solution so customers begin to get value from their investment sooner than with other vendors. Appian is committed to customer success.

Cons

Appian is Business Process Management (BPM) software. The company is trying to broaden the product beyond BPM and the message is confusing to prospects. Appian relies to heavily on its very high ranking withy Gartner.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Appian set out to redefine the BPM market and we're still doing that today. We're not your typical BPM software or BPM company -- we're a platform to help people scale their ideas, not just automate them. I'll be the first to admit it -- that can be a little confusing or that can be inspiring. You said something very interesting though -- that you feel isolated. Appian's success means we're growing rapidly but that's no excuse for leaving anyone behind -- especially in our field staff. Our headquarters teams exist to support you and our clients so I hope you speak up -- if not to me or your manager, at least to Debbie and HR -- so we can make it right for you and anyone else similarly situated. Transforming the way world works is difficult and in every case it takes a team effort. I would encourage you to reach out to me directly to talk about your situation. I would be happy to accompany you to a meeting with prospects and then we talk more specifically about how Appian's messaging is being received by the marketplace.

Not a sales company

Pros

Product is good and there are a lot of smart people in engineering and product management.

Cons

CEO is too controlling on product direction. This is not a sales oriented company and respect for sales professionals is very questionable by executive management.

Thanks for taking the time to share your views. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience but I'm always available to discuss your issue. All four of us Co-founders spend a considerable amount of time in the field directly supporting our sales professionals so we try to pay close attention to their concerns. Is Appian sales-oriented, engineering-oriented, or PS-oriented? My contention is that we must be all three to make our clients successful. As for the product roadmap, there are times when I selfishly wish I controlled it all myself but the wisdom to balance tactical client needs with a long-term, strategic perspective is not resident in one mind alone. It's a strong vision from the CEO paired with a well-functioning marketplace of ideas that has gotten us this far.

Pros

Appian hires smart, interesting, hard-working people who are great to work with. The company is committed to following best practices in its software development, and is constantly examining its processes to find what works and change what doesn't. There is a big push for leadership from within and self-organizing teams. Appian provides many opportunities for employees to make contributions they think are valuable, including strong support for Indie Time and a newly initiated Fed Ex Day. The company also does a good job of organizing fun events for employees, including after-work beer and wine socials, movie nights for big movie premiers, laser tag, and holiday getaways.

Cons

The biggest issue is work-life balance as there is a strong push to deliver new features with aggressive schedules. Middle management can be harsh when unexpected events cause development to take longer than originally expected. Rapid growth in number of employees also comes with challenges but management is aware of this and does their best to ensure the growth does not impact quality and company values.
