Pros

Being affiliated with the noble cause of higher education. There are tangible rewards when you see the impact you can have on students.

Cons

The university in its quest to become so large has made the learning experience a difficult one for faculty, staff and students. The campus is crowded. As result, peforming the basics of your job (i.e. research, teaching, administration) take on a complexity that isn't present at smaller campuses.

Pros

Biodesign is a good place to work at. Lots of opportunities for bio- related research. The place is new and all fresh, with new possibilities on the horizon for new areas of research and development. For the chemists, there are some good professors to work with.

Cons

The school is not highly ranked among others in chemistry and life sciences although its no 5 in number of articles published in top journals like Nature and Science. Moreover, I think George Poste was an outstanding leader for Biodesign Inst. for the last 5 years but is now moving on for another position within ASU, posing a slow down for the extreme growth he led through the last few years.

Pros

ASU provides employees with excellent health benefits. As a state employee, you have a wide range of plans that fit your needs. Employees can also register to take classes at a reduced rate at the university.

Cons

With serious state budget cuts, the university is forced to make signifcant personnel cuts,, implement mandatory furloughs and cut departmental budgets. These measurements created a terrible work environment where employees feel absolutely no job security and worry whether they will make the next round of cuts. Employees must pay the full rate for parking passes, which can cost up to $700+ if you want to park near your building. Also, the pay is considerably low versus your experience and level of education. While the number of employees decreases, the amount of work remains the same, leaving remaining employees to do the job of several with no raises in sight.
