Pros

Good experience for civilian career and possible TS/SCI clearance that can not be obtain individually. It is only 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer, with possibilities of deploying to Iraq. Able to serve your country part-time and gain leadership training. Good signing bonues in a time of war with savings plans.

Cons

Uncertain when you may be called or deployed. It is difficult to get health coverage unless you are doing active-duty time, but possible. Having to do 1 weekend of month can sometimes get in the way of other plans, but it must be done.

Pros

It is a close knit organization, and lots of opportunity to progress in your career if you are flexible and willing to spend large amounts of time away from home and family. Compensation and benefits are very competitive for a small midwestern city. Also, it is a great way to serve your country.

Cons

Possibility of long deployments away from home. You must be prepared to spend a lot of time with your job, and with continuing your professional development at various leadership and technical schools. Operation tempo is extremely high right now. Recognition and feedback is slow to come.

Pros

Good pay, we receive a set amount for each rank. I am an E-5(SGT) which with all pay and allowances total $3696 per month before taxes. We also receive a pay rais once per year across the board. The benefits are excellent, my family and have full medical, dental, and vision. I pay $29 per month for this coverage. I have no copays for any services to include prescriptions. Our retirement is pretty good also, after 20 years of service I will receive 50% of my base pay for the highest rank I held. I will also be able to draw retiement immediately, rather than waiting til I am 65. We also have a retirement invest plan also, called the TSP(thrift savings plan) where my contributions are diversified into stocks varying from low to high risk at my choosing.

Cons

Possibility of having to be away from my family for extended periods. This has only happend a few times through my 9 years of service.
