Terrible Company for Software Engineers

Pros

Un-tracked PTO, large corporate benefits (health, dental, 401k, etc).

Cons

Ascend is a typical big acquisition company. Everything is about squeezing the child companies as much as possible to increase the short-term bottom line without regard to the long-term effects upon the software's marketability/functionality. The CTO has an off-shore first policy. All development is moving to a shared resources approach. All projects must go through architectural council, conform to specific technologies, and be beneficial to other business units to get approval. They ignore the subject matter experts. They refuse to back-fill dev positions. The list goes on. Don't work here. It will kill your soul.

Pros

Most coworkers are great, company offers flexible schedules, ok compensation

Cons

A headquarters half a country away, not always on the same page. Excruciatingly slow pace on every project. Stunning squandering of labor, where people sit around looking busy and watching the clock because they are blocked by an IT department that cannot deliver and consistently displays the middle finger to the rest of the company. Career-minded people will be frustrated here. Too many lengthy incident calls, same issues time after time, nothing learned. I'm not exactly an IT expert, but this is easily the worst IT department I have worked with. The department is a poison pill to the organization, yet frustratingly lauded in company-wide meetings. CEO seems to be a good guy but probably has no idea what happens in the trenches.

Pros

the few nice people, not working weekends, getting a check

Cons

Not sure where to even begin.. this is by FAR the worst place I've ever worked... the mental drainage from this place will send you in a spiral... management was never available to help, team is bias and will talk behind your back, consistent tech issues and old age technology.. No one ever knows whats going on- constant changes in B2B when money is not being made, overworking staff and UNDERPAYING staff and will disguise it as "getting mire experience".. they tend to cross train almost everyone here so they dont have to hire more people, or pay the current more. Its a chaotic disaster, and not shocked if this place starts losing money to its competitors.
