Pros

Astranis is an up and coming aerospace company in the heart of San Francisco. It’s located in a historic building right off of Pier 70 that absolutely passes the vibe check of a new hard tech startup (awesome facility, free lunches/snacks, myriad of perks, etc). I have grown so much during my time at Astranis. The people, culture, setting, and mission all work together to create the perfect work environment that rewards those seeking the most out of their careers. During my time at Astranis I have seen my scope increase and I believe my work is meaningful towards connecting the unconnected. The people of Astranis are all brilliant in their own ways and learning alongside them is the perfect way to acquire new skills, both for your professional and personal life. Most importantly, the future prospect of the company is strong. Astranis should become a revenue generating company within the year by launching 5 satellites. Even during the current economic downturn where most of tech is doing layoffs, Astranis has remained steadfast, financially healthy, and continues to grow! This is telling of the executive leadership that has created a company that can endure and has a product offering and business case with merit.

Cons

Let’s be real, this isn’t your 40 hrs a week gig or big tech where you can coast. I often find myself pondering about work in my personal life, BUT with some discipline it is absolutely possible to maintain a healthy work life balance.

Pros

Interesting technical work Coworkers willing to take the time to explain the systems they work on

Cons

Abysmal work life balance High turnover rate Subject matter experts ignored when conflicting with leadership's in-group opinions Disrespectful attitudes towards women in engineering roles Schedule; Middle managers would acknowledge to teams that deadlines set by upper management were impossible to meet Frequent re-orgs, disorganized company growth not helped by the high turnover rate in combination with aggressive hiring targets (at the time)

Best job I've ever had

Pros

After working at several ~prestigious~ but bureaucratic and incredibly boring jobs at big companies, astranis made me like engineering again. Great environment (sick office, generous lunches and dinners from basically wherever you want, five types of granola bars and carbonated waters available at all times, really smart people to learn from and work with). It's not full of soulless tech bros whose favorite conversation topic is how their friend at Google makes more money than they do. The company's doing a cool thing, everyone there is passionate about space and building cool stuff that helps humanity. Management has been better at all levels than anywhere else I've been.

Cons

WLB is somewhat up to you but there is a culture of working a lot of hours.
