      I was headhunted from a competitor. I should have known better. Atkins was not what it claimed.

      Pros

      Very structured and organised firm (but was not for me). There was an early emphasis on induction and training but this was not followed through into the promised opportunities.

      Cons

      Focus on utilisation and profit is expected in this environment but Atkins was relentless in this regard, measuring return on staff as a metric in a machine-like way

      Pros

      Location is good, staff are very eager. Wins a lot of work as they use graduates/junior engineers in place of senior staff which means the rates are always low. Employs a high number of contract staff which means overheads are low Will give you plenty of rope, just try not to hang yourself.

      Cons

      Management are completely clueless Run by very politically motivated people who believe functionality and deadlines come second to covering ones backside. Does not have the tools to do the job. Often leave projects half done for others to rectify, then take the credit

      Pros

      There was plenty of employee help available within the company re HR issues and training opportunities. Senior management seemed interested in the department and its employees. the usual employee benefits applied.

      Cons

      Unfortunately I had the impression that the culture within my department was stuck in a bad place and no one was able or willing to move it forward. There was an incredibly high number of unhappy employees that I worked with, employee value was low.
