Pros

If you are thinking about a position at this company, a must read is the Glass Door review “Big Ambitions? Or Total Hubris?” for a balanced perspective. Consider the recent Glassdoor Atomic Machine reviews are suspect, as there appears to be a pattern of overly positive feedback with little detail, which may not fully reflect the company’s environment. This start-up had good resources, including skilled engineers and impressive amenities like quality snacks and alcohol,

Cons

Great snacks does not make up for no IP. The technical challenges are difficult and the schedules are not realistic. Important milestones are missed repeatedly. An effort to reach a milestone in 2023 was labeled a “Death March”. Leadership team lacks the experience taking cutting edge technology to proof of concept, Validation, and Commercial production. A significant challenge for engineers at this company is the frequent requirement to align design decisions with the 'long-term vision.' The company objectives are to create a cutting edge component based on a cutting edge manufacturing concept that isn’t fully developed. Project management approaches are changed regularly. The number of missed milestones is proof that the challenges of parallel development of a cutting-edge component and the manufacturing capability have been underestimated! This issue stems from the initial vision of the company, which appears to have been conceived without a full understanding of the technological complexities involved in realizing such ambitions. The missed schedules have resulted in an environment where projects are dictated (micro-managed) by someone who may not fully grasp the underlying issues. Additionally, superficial interactions are the norm, and genuine support often wanes when you are perceived as less useful. PS Don’t ask for vacation time…..

At Atomic Machines, our fast growth requires frequent updates to our Key Results (KR) planning. While our timelines are aggressive, this is the reality of working at the forefront of technology. Our intellectual property is currently in stealth mode, but we’ve made significant progress and aim to be commercial-ready soon. We’re proud of our talented engineers and continue refining our approach to innovation. Learning from both success and setbacks is key to creating a supportive and valued team environment. To address concerns about leadership experience, we’ve hired seasoned leaders from successful companies to guide us through our next phase of growth. We value transparency and appreciate feedback like yours, which helps us improve. And while we enjoy great snacks, our focus remains on building a thriving, innovative environment.

Pros

Everyone at AtomicMachines is smart and hard-working. Most everyone I've worked with are very nice and friendly.

Cons

Some critical tech leaders in the engineering org have huge egos, and a tendency to dictate every aspects of technical decisions, They have driven away a large number senior engineers out of the company, making themselves even bigger "godfather" figures in the team overtime. If you decide to interview with this company, consider asking the tenure of each person interviewing you, and whether the role is for backfills or organic growth. It will offer you a good idea of talent retention of the company, and the prospect of your future here. Don't bother asking about work life balance if you are an engineer, because you will not have it here.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We understand that turnover can sometimes be seen as a concern, but it's important to consider the context. For a 4-year-old startup, the average tenure of our team (2.25 years and counting) is actually higher than industry averages. The average tenure may seem short but that is likely because of the rapid growth from 0-100 employees in 4 years, most of which happened in the last 2 years. This tenure reflects both the rapid scaling of our team and our commitment to performance management. At Atomic Machines, we prioritize building a strong, high-performing company, which means we are continually refining our team to ensure we have the right people in place to drive success. While this can sometimes lead to turnover, it’s a natural part of growth and essential for maintaining a healthy, thriving company. We remain committed to supporting our employees' growth and fostering an environment where top talent can thrive.

Groundbreaking Mission, Achievable Goals, and Engaged Leadership

Pros

- Roadmap: AM builds its tech stack on a robust roadmap with achievable milestones. The tech is amazing, and while the ultimate goal is industry-defining, the steps to get there are super achievable, which is what sold me on this initially. - Product-Market Fit: Thoughtful tailoring of especially the early deliverables in said roadmap to the market is of extreme importance for startups to avoid wasting time on pivoting. This is especially true for startups such as AM, and this is very present here. - Robust Structure for Growth: Efforts are actively focused on building internal processes and providing a robust toolset that guides development without constraining the team. While historically this aspect may have lacked somewhat, it's commendable to see a clear focus on structuring for growth now, and the team is super receptive to that, which is awesome. - Clear and Hands-On Leadership: Management team has admirable thirst for technical debt to really understand problems and how to fix them

Cons

- Limited Team Size: One downside of thoughtful scaling is that it doesn't happen rapidly: Teams are small and shared resources need to be carefully managed. - Uncertainty: This is a startup, after all.
