Fast pace with a lot of learning opportunities

Pros

Atto is a fast-paced environment, which is pretty much what you’d expect from the quantitative trading firm. The bar is high, but your output actually matters, and I personally like it. You’re expected to actually understand what you’re doing and why, not just blindly do what you’ve been told. You get involved in real discussions early, and there’s quite a bit of responsibility from the start. It’s really great for learning, but maybe not for people who prefer a “doer-by-instruction” type of setup. The team is sharp and very driven, but also easy to work with. Colleagues and management are easy to get in touch with, and usually happy to share context or constructively push back on ideas. It’s pretty straightforward, without too much unnecessary stuff getting in the way, which is a big plus. There’s a pretty clear link between what you do and how you’re rewarded, so compensation is competitive if you perform.

Cons

The pace can get intense and priorities shift quite a bit, it takes some time to get used to that.

Don't ever work here

Pros

Remote work, I guess. Still not worth it.

Cons

I wrote a new trading system for this firm. For 8 months it traded fine in the test environment while their quant team stalled on the most basic C++ errors imaginable, like problems a 1st year university student would have. In my 1:1 I volunteered to help fix it every week for months and got ignored. None of the code I saw could even compile due to missing headers. Now I have a short tenure at this loser no-name company on my resume and it has been difficult to even get interviews. I wasn't the only one, about a third of the company was let go while I was there, they won't care about you at all. Their talk about milestones is garbage when you're dependent on some other silo. Don't make the same mistake I did, avoid this company.

Pros

- High ownership environment. The culture is big on making impact and getting stuff done. - Very smart coworkers who are also friendly, happy to collaborate, and low-ego. - Lots of opportunities to work on genuinely interesting and fairly cutting-edge modeling and research problems - The firm has made huge improvements to core infrastructure. This includes all sorts of stuff like compute, storage speed, data availability, platform robustness, etc. - The firm being smaller means good ideas can move quickly and individuals can shape the direction of research.

Cons

- Parts of the core C++ platform still contain old clunky legacy code, and although there has been a lot of cleanup work, there is still a long way to go. - Because the firm is relatively small, some quality-of-life tools and "nice to have" internal systems are missing compared to larger shops. - As a researcher, you often need to spend some time on the research pipeline and development work rather than purely on modeling or idea generation.
