Pros

No fear of being laid off

Cons

Opportunities for associates as a core value seems to be stretching it lately. Raises seem to decrease as you gain valuable experience.

Fading company culture

Pros

Auto-Owners has one of the best training programs in the industry for underwriters. New hires are well-equipped for success, and many go on to excel at other companies. The pension plan is a rare and valuable benefit, and the time-off policy is fairly generous.

Cons

Despite branding itself as "The Refreshingly Human Company," that identity is quickly fading. As the company grows, it's lost much of the small-field, personal touch that once defined it. The culture has shifted, and there’s a noticeable lack of joy, care, and connection among associates. Leadership often micromanages and lacks cohesive direction. Coordination between departments is poor, and associate input doesn't seem to carry much weight. Pay is significantly below industry average, even for leadership roles. It's not uncommon for underwriting supervisors or managers to earn less here than they would in the same position elsewhere. Health insurance is weak, the 401(k) match is minimal, and overall benefits are outdated. The company is increasingly seen as a stepping stone — great for training, but not for long-term career growth. And notably, no one who leaves seems to return.
