Pros

The benefits were very good. I also truly liked my co-workers, and have made some lifelong friends while working there.

Cons

Like many companies, BECU is struggling to achieve DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion). I'm a white woman, and experienced ongoing gender bias from my manager. I reached out to his manager and to HR for almost 20 months, and kept hearing "we don't perceive any sexism here." They're good people who mean well, but don't have a strong understanding of what bias is, or how it manifests. I was hired as one of the replacements for four women who'd left previously. Another woman left last year. I'm the sixth. Even if leaders don't understand bias, I think they should have understood outcome (smart, experienced women leaving the team, or leaving BECU all together).

Thank you for your feedback and for your service to the credit union. At BECU, we believe diversity in background, perspective and thought is critical to our success and strive to foster an environment where our employees feel accepted, are treated fairly and respectfully, and can bring their whole selves to work. Any form of bias and discrimination is not tolerated and we have policies in place to prevent this type of unwanted behavior. We’re sorry to hear this wasn’t your experience and have shared your comments with HR leaders. We are also dedicated to taking an active stance in making changes at the individual, structural and broader co-op levels to support diversity, equity and inclusion. While some actions have already been taken, we understand that becoming a more equitable cooperative requires a long-term commitment, one that involves implementing more inclusive policies, practices and programs, and putting these structures at the heart of our strategic and business plans. Thank you again for sharing your comments as it helps ensure we’re providing a consistent experience across the organization.

Great Benefits with Low Pay and Maximum Stress Levels

Pros

Benefits at BECU were truly fantastic while I was with BECU. HSA, FSA, Transit, Dental, Vision, Health for 4 people, tuition assistance was limited, but, nice. Kind and compassionate coworkers were always helpful when you needed them.

Cons

Upper Management does not listen to their employees, everyone is always stressed, I never met anyone who was not under massive pressure from above. Front facing individuals are grilled for small mistakes, while, some leaders who drive the company into the ground are promoted and praised. Professional development is limited and promotions are extremely rare. I saw almost 20-30 people go through my department most quitting or being fired. Leadership was hired exclusively externally rather than performing internal promotions or leadership training. Leaders are typically racist and only hire friends and white people or individuals from larger banks. This takes away from the community focus of the Credit Union, the reason for my joining. Pay is extremely low for how much workload you may have, depending on the department, you may be asked to work overtime every day. I remember one manager I worked with occasionally was making less than $80,000 per year, but, worked almost 70 to 80 hours per week. This means they were making about $20 per hour, probably much less than most of their employees.

Committed for life

Pros

Not for profit is good

Cons

The marketing campaign delivers a much different face than what you see in corporate headquarters- much less diversity. Hard to move around. People stay in a position for many, many years. Work life balance is mostly lip service- ie: I took a 2 week vacation one year and was told never to take off that much time again.

Thank you for your feedback and tenure at BECU. Reflecting diversity at every level of the organization is incredibly important to ensure we’re representing our membership and the communities we serve. While our diversity metrics are in line with or better than suggested benchmarks overall, we recognize our opportunity to further improve in this area and are focused on doing so now and in the future. At BECU, we’re also committed to supporting our employees’ health, financial future and personal well-being, which includes promoting work-life balance and encouraging employees to use their paid time off (PTO). We are disappointed to hear your feedback as it does not reflect this commitment. We have passed along your comments to our leadership team.
