Pros

Truly remote-first culture, not just in name. Remote before remote was cool. You can genuinely work from home without pressure to be “always on" and you can know that there will absolutely never be a return to office mandate here. Work-life balance is possible, especially if you have a strong manager who advocates for their team and protects their time. Your day to day work is with genuinely great people. Leaving the people I worked with everyday was such a difficult decision to make.

Cons

Compensation is significantly below market rates, which makes retention and morale challenging over time. Everyone acknowledged this. Raises were rare and in the peak of inflation there was no raise. Recent struggles hitting company goals have led to very reactive decision-making. There’s a pattern of initiatives being rolled out without enough strategic planning, resulting in “two steps forward, three steps back” and lots of whiplash that results. Communication is severely lacking. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Acquiring and integrating very different companies has created operational friction. There often seems to be a lack of upfront planning, leading to a “building the plane while flying it” approach that doesn’t scale well at a larger company size. A few years ago at a One Day we were told the days of this are gone, but they have only increased since.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and candid reflection on your experience. We’re especially grateful for the many years you invested in BELAY and for the impact you made during your time with us. We’re encouraged to hear that the remote-first culture, flexibility, and relationships you built were meaningful highlights. Creating an environment where people can do excellent work while also honoring their personal lives has always been a core part of who we are, and we’re grateful that this was your experience. At the same time, we take your feedback seriously. Your comments regarding compensation, communication, and organizational change reflect areas we are actively evaluating as we continue to grow and evolve. We recognize that seasons of growth and transition can feel challenging, and feedback from long-tenured team members is especially valuable in helping us better understand where we need to improve. Your encouragement to remain grounded in strong cultural foundations, clear communication, and thoughtful planning is heard. These are important priorities, and insights like yours help inform how we move forward with greater intention. Thank you again for your honesty, your contributions, and the care you’ve shown for BELAY, even in your feedback. We wish you continued success and fulfillment in your next chapter. Warmly, The BELAY Team

Pros

The hiring process was very straightforward, I matched with a business within weeks of starting, and I am still working with the same business with no plans to leave! I’ve only had a positive experience with Belay and have had a very communicative CSC to rely on when I have any questions.

Cons

The ONLY complaint I have and was unaware of when hired, was that the business I work for cannot hire me as an employee for 2-3 years AFTER they end their contract with Belay. Or they could “buy me out” but it’s anywhere from 10k-20k depending on how long I’ve been with them. It seems rather steep in my opinion considering the fact that the business I work for pays Belay the same amount they pay me per month.

Hi there, thank you so much for your review! It's good to hear that you felt our hiring process was efficient and that your CSC has been very communicative. In regard to your concern about buyouts, we would suggest directly addressing this with your CSC, and/or reviewing your contract as that is something that concerns BELAY and our clients.

Pros

Work from home with flexible schedule. It was what I needed at the time to transition out from a corporate environment.

Cons

They pay 1099, not W-2. That is illegal. They have responded to posts already stating that everyone knew this upfront-and that is true. But that knowledge does not make it legal. I must use the payroll company, bill pay service, and document portal they tell me to. I must upload specific documents, including a bank reconciliation to prove that it had been completed, to their portal. The pay is competitive to a W-2 rate, but not 1099 rate. And, of course, because it is 1099, no benefits.
