Pros

None. It really is a horrible place to work. It is run by ignorant management & soulless executives. The level of turpitude exhibited by this organization is flabbergasting.

Cons

If you're reading this thinking about working for this place in any craft position DON'T! The railroad is a total nightmare for any craft employee. The job is dangerous due to negligence and manipulation. The carrier lies, cheats, and steals on a regular basis from anyone and everyone they can, i.e. their customers and employees, on a scale that is truly despicable. Their business model is based solely on greed, and for which they put their employees, the public, and the nation at ever growing risk of catastrophe. I know that sounds crazy but it is 100% true. The place eventually becomes a black hole of despair to most if not all employees, especially TYE. I regret every moment I spent with this company. It was time wasted. Time that I will never get back or could be compensated enough for losing. The short and long term damage you do to your health working under the conditions created by this employer are not worth it. After adding up the number of hours worked, spent in hotels, and being on call it is almost comical to represent this career path as high paying. It is greatly exaggerated how well railroad employees are paid when you compare gross to net and this includes benefits. The retirement is supposedly great, but the chances of living long enough to collect under the current working conditions are highly unlikely. If I knew what I know now and could go back in time and offer myself fair warning. I would NOT work on/for/at the railroad.

Pros

You meet a lot of different people and create friendships.

Cons

Major strains on personal life. We've been working 3 years without a raise and through the pandemic and historic inflation. They pay is lagging big time. The days of a railroaders s/o taking care of the house and children are over. They'll need a job too and you'll likely end up being divorced. The unions are in bed with the company, they always push garbage contracts and constantly ram politics down our throats. The local union leadership doesn't care if the company breaks agreements, unless it affects them personally. We're told we already make too much and we don't deserve the health insurance we receive. Most jobs are on call 24/7 without any scheduled rest days. This company also used the current supply chain failures as leverage to change the attendance policy. The upper management, the people we never see or meet don't care about how their policies affect employee's lives. Big red flag: Nearly everyone that made similar pay at a previous job quits. The only people they hold onto are those that never made wages close to the amount that the railroad pays.
