Pros

Mellon is an ok place to work. The starting salary is good, and the benefits are not bad either. My managers are very flexible as far as time off and not over extending too much past the 40 hour work week. The workload is reasonable.

Cons

Career development. Once you start working in a position it is very hard to get promoted up. They also tend to not give anything but the bare minimum for raises. Also because its a financial company, when the economy sucks, brace yourself as layoffs could be around the corner.

Pros

Within trust area, strategic decision making was not sound. I was there during a very difficult period for the industry and business. For instance, acquistion of JPMorgan's trust business was probably too big for the management team at BNY to handle. This then resulted in high turnover in both junior and senior management ranks and drift in strategy.

Cons

Finding its footing during and after the 2008 financial crisis is going to be very distracting. This is especially true in the trust area.

Pros

The only reason to work for The Bank of New York Mellon is if you want a job that is secure and you don't have to think too much or work hard.

Cons

There are many downsides to working for the Bank of New York Mellon (BNYM). I worked in the Master Trust department, which perfromed accounting for pension funds and other large institutions. The work was extremly boring and unsatisfying. I would only have to really "work" 2 weeks out of the month. This may fine with some people, but not being challenged or growing professionaly is a problem with me. The company treated their employees like garbage, had poor morale, and provided non career advancement. I am not some disgruntled former employee. I was always given excellent reviews, given high % raises, and put on a "special" program where I recieved a raise every six months. This program was "special" because you weren't allowed to tell anyone you were on it. If you had a program like this and wanted to provide an incentive to your employees to work harder, wouldn't you want to tell all the employees about the program? Stay away, don't even consider it. Even if this is your first job offer out of college don't accept it. It wil only set your career back in the long run.
