Pros

The opportunity to help low income housing, people with disabilities, and elderly

Cons

VP of Human Resources had no idea what she was doing along with other members of management who have seniority. Favoritism is displayed.

Pros

overall this is a good company! your experience will differ based on the region you are located in. The CEO is thoughtful and empathetic! The work life balance is appropriate. If you in the right demographic and a team player this is the company for you!

Cons

Some managers struggle to see the big picture and will manage in a very narrow space. They try to interpret the corporate message as they see it. This creates a environment of thinking there actions are in line with the corporate goals but in reality they are not inline and create frustration and a some what hostile environment.

Pros

If you are a housing professional or general "business person," then apply or take the offer, depending on which stage in the process you find yourself. Beacon is full of solid, hard working people who are committed to the company's success, as well as your own. There are ample opportunities for improvement and the company likes to hire from within. The executive team is generally friendly and seeks to create an open and inclusive company culture. Pay is competitive from what I understand, and benefits are solid. They seek a positive work-life balance, but that is not always the case, especially when it is inspection and budget seasons. As companies go, it is a fine employer. However, if you think deeply about your work and its place in the world, read on to the "Cons" section.

Cons

As a privately owned company whose portfolio consists largely of affordable properties, Beacon Communities profits from poverty. One does not need a degree in finance to understand that once something becomes profitable, the drive is to continue that endeavor. Therefore, the privately owned, affordable housing industry not only profits from poverty, but perpetuates poverty, as well. This happens not only in the direct reception of subsidized rents and government funds, but through the tax-credit system. All new properties are built or existing ones rehabilitated by way of investors who receive massive tax cuts over an extended period of time. These banks, investment firms and capital groups already reap massive direct profits, so these tax breaks only increase their incredible margins. If these monies were reinvested into the root causes of poverty and homelessness, there would probably be little need of the industry in the first place. However, with the rise of neo-liberalism in the late 1970's and early 1980's, and government's eschewing of its responsibilities to its most vulnerable citizens, this is the system in which we operate. Furthermore, affordable housing consists of self-contained properties, or communities as the industry likes to call them. We all know them better as projects. In doing so, the industry perpetuates segregation, not only of the poor, but since the majority of the poor populace in this country are BIPOC, it also perpetuates racial segregation. Finally, when the eviction moratorium ends, the potential for massive hardship in the name of profit is all too real. Simply put, it comes down to your perspective on human worth, capitalism, and the role of government. As shelter is at the top of the hierarchy of human needs, should a person be denied housing simply because they cannot afford it? Obviously, this author has a certain perspective on the subject. While this review became an indictment of an industry, and Beacon is a good company when viewed apart from its work, it is still part of this system. This is why, regardless of the good individuals I worked with and friendships I made, I could simply no longer stomach working so directly in making other people money in this manner.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are excited to hear about your endorsements of our drive to promote from within, competitive compensation programs, and inclusive company culture. We appreciate your sharing your opinion of the industry. The affordable housing industry is comprised of a wide range of organizations, and we believe Beacon stands out from the rest. Beacon has a long track record of serving diverse, vulnerable communities through the system of tools created by local, state, and our federal government to deliver affordable housing and end homelessness. We are proud of delivering on our mission to the thousands of families and individuals we serve. Dara Kovel Chief Executive Officer
