It's like a bad sitcom

Pros

Subsidized Snacks. I'm not even joking, the company pays for snacks. It's amazing. I will warn you, if you like bananas make sure you grab them early in the morning. There's a few guys that eat all the bananas right away. The poor receptionist can barely keep up with their ravenous appetite for bananas. I'm an apple guy and there's usually always some Granny Smith's there for me. Great Co-workers. The people here are amazing! Most of the managers are great people that understand the plight of us lowly lab rats. Seriously, they really understand how things work in a lab, and aren't completely removed from experiments. I've made some great friends here, too. If you ever get a chance, step outside, where you’ll see some people vaping at the corner of the building. Even though I don't partake in the vape, it's kind of a social hot spot. I've made some great friends at BioAgilytix, and it's nice because we've stayed in touch after they quit... and they will quit. Intellectually Stimulating Projects. We work on some really cool stuff here. It's a great resume builder. If you decide to work here, make sure you build your resume. You'll need to.

Cons

DO NOT listen to them about the bonuses. You're promised 10% interviewing, but that never happens. Let's talk about "merit" based pay increases you should be getting every year. I'm not really sure what the executive team was thinking about this year’s pay increases. You'd think they'd correlate with performance reviews, but they didn't. Tons of people that got outstanding or exceeds (the top two performance categories) got minimal pay increases, whereas people that got marginal reviews, and people that were on performance reviews because of their poor performance got large pay increases. Let's just say that caused some tension in the lab... Do you like taking on more responsibility for no money? That's the BioAgilytix way! Promotions at BioAgilytix are when you give someone a new title, and a lot more responsibilities but NO monetary increase other than their tiny merit increase. More than a few people are a little salty about their new positions. The executive team has been getting hostile lately. We recently renovated the building. They didn't really think about the flow of the lab when renovating so you have to walk through the main lobby if you need to get between the labs. We were told it was ok for us to walk samples through the lobby, since it's the ONLY way to move samples. Well the other day, I overheard someone from HR telling the receptionist to keep track of people who brought samples into the lobby because he was going to get us in trouble. Another example would be the Christmas party that never was... The morale in the company was so low that pretty much everyone declined to go to the scheduled Christmas party out of spite, and the party was canceled. Now, we're getting barrages of e-mail from one of the grumpy secretaries about "employee engagement activities". Basically the executive team want us to show up for events outside of work hours while not getting paid. Even though they're voluntary, if we don't respond or we don't attend, we'll get rude e-mail from said secretary. Also, when the exec team sees truthful reviews on Glassdoor, they go on a hunt to find out who did it. Spoiler alert: They're not looking for advice on how to fix morale. As I said before, you meet a lot of cool people here, but don't expect them to hang around for a while. No one is on Facebook while on the job, because pretty much everyone is scheduling interviews or on job search websites trying to find a way out. It's heartbreaking.

Pros

Knowledgeable/friendly coworkers, subsidized snacks/drinks, good PTO.

Cons

EBITA not attainable = poor bonus rate, management plays favorites, senior management only interested in revenue, despite promises there is no real career development, penny-pinching tactics to avoid necessary spend on equipment and software that will make scientists' jobs easier.

Pros

Subsidized vending machines and free coffee. Great coworkers (you’ll bond over the many ways the company does you wrong). Jim Datin is cool; somehow knows everyone by their first name. Afshin is a great guy, very personable and always convinces you about the passion behind what we do (unfortunately he’s rarely on site and the company is growing away from what we were told it would be).

Cons

If you’ve done your research, you’ll hear that BioAgilytix is one of the Triangle’s “fastest growing companies” and that they’ve recently expanded their facilities to 21k sq. feet. The company is also global, with their buy-out of facilities in Germany. Great stuff on paper, but what it means for you as a potential employee is that resources are stretched thin, training is minimal and usually provided by someone else who just started, and the expansion provides disconnected lab spaces in which you will be donning and doffing your PPE as you travel through lab and public areas to pick up your samples from a distant freezer. Poor planning of new lab spaces is just the tip of the iceberg of problems you’ll deal with. They run ancient analysis platforms that crash when more than 6 analysts try to log in. They don’t have enough licenses for each employee to gain access to daily tracking systems, so be prepared to “borrow” a log on or bother someone to do parts of your job for you. If a reader goes down in one lab, you’re trekking your plates bare handed and lab coat free until you reach a reader in another suite, only then can you put on your single lab coat that you’re expected to carry with you. They’ll scam you in your offer letter, so read it carefully. Don’t factor your bonus into your compensation because targets are barely ever met. I don’t have room to explain the many pitfalls and inefficiencies of this place.
