Pros

If you are a recent graduate willing to accept low-pay and long hours to gain a foothold in technology and remain in or move to a nice location, Blackbaud is a good choice. If you want to work for someone who enable non-profits, this is a clear choice.

Cons

The pay is below market, but the cost of living in the Charleston area is very high. Their benefits (they are self-insured) are not attractive to anyone over 25 and or who have children. The company owns its market, therefore it is satisfied with its technology, systems and culture. It sees no reason to make changes and the majority of the management team have been homesteading for years. This makes for a company that prides compliance, certainty and contractive thought and above all, risk management and cost containment.

Good company, long hours

Pros

Great people, good benefits, opportunities to grow within the company

Cons

Any kind of billable position strongly discourages any kind of work/life balance. You will be working long hours with very competitive people who are mostly interested in the bottom line. There are other positions that are less cut-throat, but they don't pay as much or offer the same growth potential.

Pros

It's way to serve others, yet the compensation level is way above what nonprofits typically pay. Great environment, very talented and friendly people, and Charleston is an amazing city. You get to interact with nonprofits from all over the world and get some clues as to their mission and how you can support that in the software.

Cons

As stated elsewhere, Charleston doesn't have a lot of software companies in the area, so make sure you're committed before you relocate. My manager could be a bit more visible to our team, but that's maybe just more of a function of how an individual operates than a group. On the other hand, I get left alone to do what I know needs to be done.
