Pros

Coming from a large multi-media company, its a breathe of fresh air to be in a hardworking start-up environment and to see the work you do come into frution. My manager has pushed me to grow both professionally and personally. The main reason I took this job was because I saw potential in the company and in the role. It's all about what you make of it, your mindset and what you make use of your time. If you're here to grow, work hard. and take your job seriously then its the right place for you. The door is open to talk to any of the execs at any time. It makes such a difference in being able to have access for one on one conversation and feedback on your experience here. They've invested their time and energy into this company, which is why it continues to grow into the brand that it is today. The employees here are supportive and collaborative as most of our work cross-departments. Culture is inclusive and creative with lots of fun events and gatherings.

Cons

Working in media is a big challenge so occasionally its can be hard to find the work/life balance if you don't organzine accordingly. Parking isn't available however there is commuter benefits to use for public transportation or uber/lyft pool which is a good alternative.

Additionally, based on employee feedback, one new update that we're happy to share, is that Employees can now choose to distribute their Commuter Benefits monetary allowance towards the category of their choice across rideshare, transit, and qualified paid parking options.

Amazing Opportunity for Learning & Career Development

Pros

I have worked at a top 4 consulting firm and another start up, and neither have compared in terms of the opportunities available at Blavity. The work is fast-paced and employees are pushed outside of their comfort zones in order to grow their own skills, as well as to add value to the company. It makes a difference to know that your work is acknowledged and appreciated, and that your opinion matters in the office. The Exec Team is very engaged and invested in the personal and career development of the employees, and has made an effort to increase transparency in terms of company goals and progress. They are also willing to have one on ones with employees, which provide a unique opportunity to learn from and be mentored by an Exec Team that continues to successfully grow a company. Blavity has also continued investing more and more into formal training and educational experiences. In terms of culture, everyone in the office is not only supportive and fun, but they are very intelligent and hard working. The people around you push you to be better, but it doesn't feel overly competitive or aggressive. I genuinely view my coworkers as friends.

Cons

There are always some challenges that come with working at a start up. There is a lot of work to be done, so expectations and workloads can be high. The positive is that the expectations are very clear, so there is never confusion about where you stand. Also, sometimes priorities and projects are shifted, but as long as transparency and open communication continues it is easier to stay flexible and trust in the direction of the Exec Team.

Black Company Exploiting Black Employees

Pros

The environment is relaxed and the employees are sociable.

Cons

Upper management is awful and lacks leadership skills. They resemble children playing CEO-for-the-day. The pay is egregious, they exploit young, black, professionals entering the workforce and are unable/choose not to hire established professionals because they lowball prospective employees. The CEO has made jokes about their employees living check-to-check. The chief execs don't seem to have a true understanding of the black experience and culture, only their narrow viewpoints and personal experiences.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. To support the gathering of information of our current culture, the People Operations Team is implementing support systems which will allow employees to provide more frequent, detailed, and confidential feedback. The hope for the team is to better identify the potential gaps/areas of opportunity in Leadership Skills and implement a strategic Leadership Development plan.
