Pros

Very flexible with scheduling Pay is great, usually averaging 20/hr (base food prices are high so a 15% tip will leave you money) Friendly managers and locals (customers)

Cons

It's a coffee/brunch place so be ready to pick up a 7am shift- those are killer

Too Big For Its Britches

Pros

- Widely applicable coffee skills and education that you don’t get at other companies. Extremely knowledgeable coffee educators. - Brand loyalty is a given. Locals don’t just want their morning coffee; they want their “Bluestone.” It’s damn good coffee, and it sells itself. I was sipping the Kool Aid when I was first hired—I met the entirety of upper management, including the CEO, during my induction. The personalized welcome felt like winning VIP passes to Disney World. I felt incredibly proud to deliver a premium, world-class, authentic Aussie experience to my locals (but of course this didn’t last.)

Cons

- Unresponsive upper management—arbitrary decisions come from the top and each store suffers differently as a result. What works for a low volume store will not work for Times Square or Bryant Park. Upper management seems surprised each time they implement a new policy without input from the individual store and it fails miserably. - Store managers are spread thin—the company is growing too fast and not enough attention is being paid to each individual store. When managers have to keep track of multiple different stores, things slip through the cracks: milk orders are short (I weathered an entire weekend without half and half and closed on a Sunday with a single gallon of whole milk), things break and never get fixed, smash stations run out of simple staples, stores become short-staffed, and the quality of the experience for the local suffers. This drags the reputation of the entire company down. - Workers are not compensated for the work they put in. Jobs that are clearly supervisory duties at other coffee shops become requirements even for employees earning the starting wage. - Because of the aforementioned issues, turnover is high. By the time I quit the company, I was no longer working with any of the coworkers who carefully watched me, trained me, and led by example. Many amazing baristas became exhausted and disillusioned and ultimately quit. They’re now thriving at other coffee shops, showing off the skills they learned at Bluestone for a higher rate of pay. - The entire brand is dedicated to reinforcing an Australian identity. That is its selling point. This creates a culture of Australian exceptionalism with a very explicit bias toward Australian employees. Mediocre upper management was praised simply for being Aussie and showing up to work, and locals came to expect hearing an Aussie accent on the sales floor.

Pros

Made friends with fellow staff over mutual distaste for the company

Cons

-Highly disorganized and overworked management: absolutely nothing is thought through from the hasty build-out of stores to the erratic hiring process -No trust of employees. Cameras in every store that are constantly watched for punishable behaviors like “not looking busy” or “sitting.” -Values aesthetics over quality, half of the baristas can’t pull a decent shot, the pastries and food are nasty and days old and marked up to the stratosphere. -No room for advancement, even if you really care about hospitality or coffee you have to settle for incremental wage increases unless you’re friends with Nick. Even the Aussies I worked with are paid less then they were promised and trapped by their work visas. -Corporate team does not take suggestions.
