It changed, A LOT

Pros

The benefits were really good and offered to even the lowest level part time managers, the schedule was also very flexible and it was really fun working in an environment where you can be around things you love and talk about them openly with coworkers and customers without coming off as a nerd!

Cons

Working here for almost 3 years, A LOT of things changed. They stopped giving us paid holiday parties, they cut hours dramatically to the point where you have to work ALONE a lot if you're a manager, which is not safe or good for shrink (and yeah, you'll get in trouble if shrink is bad). If you're an associate you'll be scheduled 5 hours a week max, every other week... Because of how dramatic the hour cuts are. The pay is also horrible, starting managers off at $12 for the amount of work that's expected. The company has also been unnecessarily pushy when it comes to sales, making us walk around with an iPad that's huge to ask customers on the sales floor if they have rewards... It makes the customer uncomfortable and neither the employee or the customer wants to be in the situation, so why implement it at all? There's more important connections to make with the customer.

Fun Environment

Pros

You're surrounded by pop culture items constantly, always knowing what's new to come (perfect job for a collector). It's a fun environment, you basically get paid to talk about your interests with customers and the managers and coworkers are very understanding and accommodating. The benefits are amazing; 30% off both in store and online, as well as 40% off at Hot Topic due to BoxLunch being its sister company.

Cons

If you have trouble talking to people/social anxieties, you're forced into talking with every single customer that walks into the store. Not just the basic "how are you?" "how can I help you?", but you have to genuinely start a conversation with them (it's daunting at first but it honestly helped me open up and be more social and outgoing in the long run).
