Split between startup and big business

Pros

All the classic "startup" perks - awesome offices, free catered lunch, unlimited snacks and la croix, a bar in the office, events like trivia/booze/beer pong, etc. A ton of people here are so friendly, talented, smart, and driven, and really want to do their best work.

Cons

Like another review stated, "PayPal with ping pong." Becomes more and more like PayPal every passing quarter, both culturally and in terms of management/goals. These are not positive changes. The bigger Braintree gets, the more the company tries to hold onto this idea of being a fun, small company with its own separate culture from PayPal. This just isn't the case. People used to hang out at the office after work, form friendships between departments/teams, etc, but not anymore. It's gotten cliquey and competitive. Managers have minimal manager training. There's almost no recognition for good work (especially when it comes from non-Product teams), only for early hires who are still around and have, seemingly by default, become team leads.

For the complacent

Pros

The company does its best to pretend that they're still a startup. There are some very neat perks like having catered lunches. The benefits are decent (above average health insurance, transit reimbursement).

Cons

Success is rarely noticed or acknowledged in any meaningful way. If you are looking for a job that you can stand out in, and use as a stepping stone, keep looking. If you are looking for a comfortable entry level role to stay in long-term, this may be your place. A company that once did a great job of noticing talent has been put under PayPal's thumb. It shows.

PayPal with ping pong

Pros

All the requisite start-uppy type things are there: free lunch, ping pong, beer, etc. If that gets you out of bed in the morning, then you're set. For the most part, the people are wonderful. This is a fine place to work if you want to clock in, keep your head down, and cash your (paltry, unless you're on the product side) check.

Cons

You are not working for a start-up. You are working for PayPal. Whatever comes to your mind when you think of PayPal is probably correct. You're not innovating with sexy tech. The startup bones are still there in the form of completely unqualified management. Early hires are managing large departments and they shouldn't be. There are a lot of elephants in the room. Some teams are happy, others are in a constant state of anxiety. The anxiety isn't because they're too busy. Very distracting open office that is somehow used as a selling point. If you're considering a role here, be aware that the flowery speeches in the interview haven't been revised in awhile. The company isn't "metrics driven" in that you will have no fair warning that you're being judged by metrics, but you sure are. Career advancement is mostly about luck and lateral moves. I think they finally stopped calling it a 'flat structure' but they were using the term for far longer than it was appropriate.
